The new trailer for HBO's True Detective channels the feel of the show's critically-acclaimed first season.

The trailer, which primarily features Mahershala Ali's Detective Wayne Hays, captures the tone and style of True Detective Season 1. The video moves back and forth through time and space as Hays investigates the disappearance of two children in Arkansas in the 1980s. Hays shows the same obsession with his unsolved case as Matthew McConaughey's Rust Cohle in Season 1. The video also features a look at other characters from the upcoming season, including Stephen Dorff's Roland West and Carmen Ejogo's Amelia Reardon.

Premiering in 2014, the crime drama features a different cast of characters and mystery each season. The first season followed a pair of Louisiana detectives hunting for a serial killer from 1995 to 2012; the second season featured a trio of detectives taking on a criminal conspiracy in Southern California. Despite the success of the first season, True Detective Season 2 saw a drop in viewership and more negative critical reception, putting the future of the series in doubt.

Returning on HBO for its third season on January 13, True Detective is created by Nic Pizzolatto, who also serves as showrunner and writer. Season 3 stars Mahershala Ali, Mamie Gummer, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy, Carmen Ejogo and Ray Fisher.
