A new mashup of Detective Pikachu and True Detective Season 1 sees the titular yellow Pokemon smoking cigarettes and tracking down criminals.

The video, produced by YouTube channel Sam & Bill Comedy, offers an unexpected mashup that sees Detective Pikachu merged with True Detective character Rustin "Rust" Cohle, played by Matthew McConaughey on the HBO series. Ash Ketchum's character has been combined with Martin "Marty" Hart, played by Woody Harrelson. Instead of using animation or CGI to create Pikachu, the video uses makeup and prosthetics.

The video pairs Pokemon characters with those from True Detective, including Misty as Maggie Hart and Dora Lange as a member of Team Rocket. There are also appearances from Wartortle and Vulpix.

In an interview with the website Birth Movies Death, director Sam Haft, "I originally wrote a version of this sketch in a pitch packet for a writing job that my lit agent sent me. I didn't get the job and then got dropped by my lit agent. So of course, I sprung into action wasting a ton of money making this comedy abomination. Now nobody else has a lit agent. Coincidence? Yes."

This is not the first time the channel poked fun and the Pokemon franchise. The duo also launched a musical episode entitled Pikachu's Lament, which again opts for a person dressed in a Pikachu outfit.

Directed by Rob Letterman from a script written by Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, Detective Pikachu stars Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Ken Watanabe and the voice of Ryan Reynolds. The film opens in theaters on May 10.
