Warner Bros. Discovery has released the first official teaser trailer for True Detective: Night Country starring Jodie Foster.
According to a press release from WBD, the fourth season of True Detective follows Foster's Detective Liz Danvers and Kali Reis' Detective Evangeline Navarro as they investigate the disappearances of eight men from the Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Ennis, Alaska. In the process, the reluctant partners "will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice." Fans are already drawing favorable comparisons between Night Country's tone and style with that of FX's Fargo.
Rounding out the cast for True Detective Season 4 are Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Isabella Star Lablanc, Aka Niviâna, Anna Lambe, Joel D. Montgrand, Christopher Eccleston and John Hawkes. Issa López is on board as showrunner, writer, executive producer and director of every episode. Foster is also attached as an executive producer, as are other big names like Barry Jenkins and Season 1 stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. Season 1 director Cary Joji Fukunaga and original series creator Nic Pizzolatto also serve as executive producers. Night Country is the first season in the franchise not written by Pizzolatto and the first since the show's debut outing to have all episodes helmed by the same director.
Foster's Return to TV
Night Country also marks Foster's first series role since her short-lived stint in a 1974 television adaptation of Paper Moon. She is perhaps best known for her Oscar-winning performance as FBI agent Clarice Starling in 1991's The Silence of the Lambs. Foster's co-star, Kali Reis, is also a highly-decorated performer in the world of boxing as a WBA, WBO, IBO and WBC champion. She made her acting debut as a former champion boxer in 2021's Catch the Fair One, which earned her critical acclaim as well as several awards and nominations.
The rebranding of True Detective's latest season coincides with Warner Bros. Discovery's relaunch of "Max," a rebranded streaming service that will combine HBO Max and Discovery+. The official relaunch will happen on May 23, complete with three new price tiers: Max Ad-Lite ($9.99/month), Max Ad Free ($15.99/month) and Max Ultimate Ad Free ($19.99/month). Consumers are mixed on WBD removing "HBO" from the name of its streaming platform, given that HBO has become synonymous with high-end, award-winning programming, including titles like Game of Thrones, The Sopranos and True Detective.
True Detective: Night Country releases on Max later this year. In the meantime, Seasons 1-3 are currently available to watch on the streamer.
