WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, now streaming on Netflix.

Fans of Guillermo del Toro were pretty surprised by the Tales of Arcadia trilogy, which has now culminated in Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans. They were accustomed to the director focusing on action, sci-fi and horror properties such as Blade II, Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth. But little did they know he could help engineer animation glory and craft something dynamic, fun and wholesome for the entire family in the shape of this all-ages series. Now, as it all wraps, it's only fitting the final hurrah has an epic Pacific Rim homage, honoring the mainstream property the director's best known for.

It occurs when Bellroc's able to raise the Fire Titan from China, controlling it to move to Arcadia so as to burn and reboot the planet. But in Hong Kong's waters, the Akiridion cavalry arrives in the form of a Jaeger. Well, it's not a Jaeger by name, but it's very much influenced by the series, with Varvatos Vex commanding a Gun Robot -- which is the show's in-universe spin on Pacific Rim.

3Below's Varvatos is tapped in and controlling the bot just like pilots such as Raleigh did in Pacific Rim, with the cockpit being a copy. In addition, the way the Titans are controlled by their mages also draws inspiration from pilots in their bots, with all the hosts taking damage in person when their avatars get hit or wounded badly in the field.

More so, the way the heroic Varvatos has the robot punching in the heat of battle, leaping, ducking and dodging, using blasters in the water and whatnot, the resemblance is uncanny. The neon lights, fight choreography and angles are so similar to when Jaegers fight Kaiju from another planet in Pacific Rim, except in Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans' case, the Titan's an ancient god.

And make no mistake, the Titan cuts a similar figure, sloshing through the waters and fighting like an angry Kaiju. It's even more perfect a tribute with the music in this sequence, which adds a lot of energy, excitement and energy to the brawl, especially as Varvatos launches his missiles at the behemoth with vicious intent.

Trollhunters: Rise of the Titansoutcome also evokes Pacific Rim with the Titan knocking Gun Robot through a bridge. The way it slowly tumbles over and sends people running compounds the comparison, with some fans even pointing out that Gun Robot bears a strong resemblance to the main Jaeger that Raleigh and co. used for the war: Gipsy Danger. The scene feels exactly like Pacific Rim and had someone just tuned in at that moment in Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, they wouldn't know the difference this CGI battle and what del Toro had on the big screen.
