Yasuhiro Nightow’s heightened sci-fi send-up of Westerns, Trigun, is a pivotal anime series from 1998 that’s nearly 25 years old, but still a celebrated property. It’s not uncommon for past anime hits to receive fancy modern remakes and remasters.

There’s currently wide speculation that Trigun is the latest ‘90s property to receive this treatment. With news of a new Trigun series imminent, it’s the perfect time to examine why a new take on Trigun is such an appealing prospect.

9 An Anime That Fully Adapts The Manga Series

Manga Trigun

A frequent concession that happens with anime series that are quick to adapt popular manga series is that they frequently veer off course from the original source material. Trigun is no exception and the events of the full series only cover the first two volumes of the 14-volume saga.

One of the most appealing aspects of a new Trigun anime is that it will be able to effectively adapt the full Trigun Maximum manga and not just cover a fraction of it. Trigun is held in high regard, but a new anime that sticks to the source material could be the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood to the original's Fullmetal Alchemist.

8 A New And Distinct Art Style

Trigun is very much a product of the ‘90s, and this is quite evident in the series’ traditional animation style. Madhouse is the animation studio that’s responsible for both Trigun and its 2010 prequel film, Badlands Rumble. Madhouse doesn’t do a poor job, but Trigun is also hardly the most aesthetically pleasing ‘90s anime.

The rumors surrounding the new Trigun anime indicate that it’s coming from Studio Orange, an animation studio that’s made a name for itself through its exceptional use of CG anime in series like Land of the Lustrous and Beastars. CG anime series typically receive a lot of criticism, but Orange knows how to handle this style, and it could push Trigun to visually amazing places that were previously impossible.

7 The Villains Can Receive Greater Nuance

A lot of the time, an anime series is only as strong as its villains, and Trigun is an action series that features an eclectic roster of gunslinger maniacs within the Gung-ho Guns. Trigun effectively shows off the Gung-ho Guns members, as well as their leader Legato Bluesummers, but these are deeply simplified versions of their manga counterparts.

The manga also includes a wealth of villains who are vital to Vash’s story but never make an appearance in the anime. A new Trigun anime has the opportunity to do these complex characters justice and further showcase the weird world of Planet Gunsmoke.

6 The Action Sequences Can Be More Chaotic

Trigun is a bombastic action series that creates a kinetic sense of action and energy with its shoot-outs and showdowns. The ‘90s anime does its best with bringing the manga’s battles to life, but Trigun Maximum contains such rich, detailed artwork by Nightow that’s frequently compared to the Berserk manga.

This has left many skeptical that the action sequences from the manga can even be properly recreated in anime. Orange is such a creative animation studio that they’ll definitely do something special with the action from Trigun. It may not be identical to the original manga, but it will likely have more style than the ‘90s series.

5 It’s More Effectively Paced And Tonally Consistent

There are 97 chapters across the 14 volumes of Trigun Maximum, which the ‘90s anime doesn’t get anywhere close to finishing. It also doesn’t help that the Trigun anime is only 26 episodes long, which limits the scope and affects the pacing of this story. The Trigun anime is surprisingly lighthearted when it begins, only for a depression to wash over Vash and the storytelling by the end.

This tonal whiplash is problematic for some and not exactly reflective of Nightow’s manga. Furthermore, the anime decides to make Meryl the main character and filter Vash through her perspective. He doesn’t even fire a bullet until the fifth episode, which creates a sense of mystery around him and his intentions.

4 The Soundtrack Can Hit Even Greater Heights

Trigun is a magical blend of many different genres and sensibilities, which is beautifully encapsulated by the anime’s soundtrack and score by Tsuneo Imahori. Imahori taps into a style of music that embraces jazz, electric, rock, and country to create an effective soundscape for this extreme science fiction Western mash-up.

It’s unclear who will be involved with the music for a new Trigun anime, but whoever it is will have a strong foundation to build upon. The music for Trigun can reference the old score or embrace new influences, regardless of whether it’s being handled by Imahori or someone completely new,

3 It Has The Potential To Add To The Original Manga With Prequel Material

Anime Trigun Badlands Rumble Vash Eats Hand

There’s more than enough material in the Trigun Maximum manga for a new anime series to adapt, but a fresh series might further expand upon the manga’s narrative. One of the few details that’s been teased for a potential Trigun reboot is a wanted poster that advertises a $$6,000,000 bounty.

When Trigun begins, Vash’s bounty is considerably higher at six-billion double dollars. It’s possible that this changed bounty reflects that the new series will begin before the events of the manga. The prequel film, Badlands Rumble, puts Vash’s bounty at $$300,000,000, so a constantly increasing bounty has already been established.

2 The Prospect Of Bringing Back The Original Voice Cast For An English Dub

Anime The Punisher Trigun

There are plenty of instances where an anime reboot goes in a completely new direction with its cast to further distance itself from its predecessor, but the opposite that feeds into nostalgia and fandom is also true.

One of the major reasons that Trigun found an audience outside of Japan is that the series had a satisfying English dub that even aired on Cartoon Network’s Toonami anime block. A lot of the English dub cast were fresh to the anime industry when they recorded their lines. Bringing back the old cast for a new series means that they could incorporate what they learned from the past and deliver more seasoned performances.

A large audience will check out the original whenever a classic series is rebooted, either to revisit it or experience it for the first time. Trigun was a popular anime during the late ‘90s and early 2000s, but it’s fallen into obscurity in recent years.

The success of a Trigun reboot means that more people can become aware of the glory of the original. There’s even the potential for the Trigun Maximum manga to get reprinted or at least become more readily available to audiences outside of Japan.
