The Tribeca Film Festival decided to add video games to its official selection for the 2021 edition, which will take place from June 9 to 20.

The New York-based film organization announced the latest addition on Thursday. The first annual Tribeca Games Award will honor games that "demonstrate artistic excellence in storytelling." Eligible selections include titles made for online, gaming consoles, virtual reality, augmented reality and mobile devices. In recent years, Tribeca has showcased games such as Legend of Legends, God of War and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. However, they were not eligible for awards.

"For years, video games have been a one-of-a-kind medium for storytelling, art, and innovation," organizers said in an announcement. The gaming awards' advisory board will include giants such as Electronic Arts' Bing Gordon, Death Stranding's Hideo Kojima, Remedy Entertainment's Sam Lake and Halo Transmedia & Entertainment head Kiki Wolfkill. Other members include filmmakers Nia DaCosta, Jon Favreau and the Game Awards' Geoff Keighley.

In addition to official selections, leading online storytellers will be considered for the NOW Creators Market, where they will pitch new games to a wide range of distributors, agencies and brands.
