The Transformers are returning for a new animated prequel series. Hasbro has partnered with production studio Rooster Teeth for Transformers: War for Cybertron, which will stream on Netflix in 2020. The series will hail from animation studio Polygon Pictures, which recently released several Godzilla anime projects on Netflix.

“In this Transformers origin story, we will explore the expansive universe of Cybertron in a way that audiences have never seen before -- to the delight of both existing fans and those coming to the franchise for the first time,” Director of Anime for Netflix John Derderian said in a statement. “The Transformers brand is a global phenomenon and we are thrilled to partner with Hasbro, Rooster Teeth and Polygon to bring this exciting new series to our members around the world on Netflix.”

Transformers: War for Cybertron has enlisted showrunner F.J. DeSanto, who also worked as a writer and producer on Transformers: Combiner WarsTransformers: Titans Return and Transformers: Power of the Primes. In addition to DeSanto, writers George Krstic, Gavin Hignight and Brandon Easton have joined the series. All three writers previously worked on Transformers cartoons: Kristic was the head writer for Transformers: Combiner Wars, Hignight was a staff writer on Transformers: Cyberverse and Easton wrote an episode of Transformers: Rescue Bots back in 2014.

According to the press release, Transformers: War for Cybertron will feature "a new animation look and style that presents the Transformers like you’ve never seen them before." Given the positive reception of Polygon Pictures' Godzilla animes, there is reason to be hopeful. Polygon has also previously produced Transformers: Prime (2010–2013) and Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2015–2017).

The Transformers started out as a toy line from Hasbro in 1984. They quickly became a popular cartoon and then expanded into comic books, movies and video games. To date, there are over 25 different animated series featuring the Transformers in one shape or another, with Transformers: War for Cybertron being the most recent.

Back in 2010, Activision published a video game also called Transformers: War for Cybertron, which also explored the Autobots' adventures before they came to Earth. It's unclear if War for Cybertron will be similar to or borrow from the High Moon Studios game.

Transformers: War for Cybertron will premiere on Netflix sometime next year.
