At Comic-Con International in San Diego’s First Strike panel, IDW Publishing announced plans (via Newsarama) for a new solo ongoing series starring the fan-favorite Transformer Unicron. Having first appeared in 1986’s animated Transformers: The Movie, the classic Transformers villain was voiced by the late Orson Welles in his final film role.
Unicron is a planet-sized Trasnformer that can consume entire planets. Its origins precede the dawn of time, as he was created by a being known as “The One” as a representation of utter chaos. Unicron has a twin brother, Primus, a force of good, and his polar opposite. In Transformers lore, Unicron has the ability to possess other Transformers — much like Quintessa did to Optimus Prime in The Last Knight — whether they be Autobots or Decepticons. The character was mentioned in The Last Knight, and is likely to play a larger role in the next Transformers film, as teased in the post-credits scene.
IDW’s Unicron solo series hasn’t been given an exact release date; it’s expected to hit shelves in 2018.
