While little is known about the plot of the film, it's said that it will exist separately from the five mainline Transformers movies, the sixth in the works from Stephen Caple Jr. and Bumblebee (Bumblebee was initially conceived as a prequel to the Bay films but was later declared a reboot).

Transformers launched in 1984 as a toy line comprised of vehicles that transform into robots under two factions: the Autobots and the Decepticons. The toys quickly spawned a multimedia franchise that includes The Transformers animated series, comic books and -- in 2007 -- a live-action film series.

The first five Transformers films were directed by Michael Bay, with Travis Knight helming Bumblebee. However, while all the films have been box-office powerhouses, all -- save for Bumblee -- have received largely negative reviews.

Although there hasn't been a Transformers film since 2018, the franchise has continued to thrive thanks to Netflix's Transformers: War for Cybertron trilogy, which concludes in July.
