Wherever he is, Michael Bay is smiling. That’s probably partially because he strapped C4 to a tiger and used it to blow up a section of downtown Los Angeles. Mainly, though, it’s because Paramount announced today that Transformers: Dark of the Moon has grossed more than $1 billion in worldwide box office sales.
That number is split between $338 million domestically and $663 million abroad. It’s also notable for being the studio’s first release to surpass $1 billion. Dark of the Moon joins Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides among the year’s billion-dollar grossers.
“We are grateful for the extraordinary work of Michael Bay and his film-making team, executive producer Steven Spielberg and everyone at Paramount around the globe who played a part in helping make this latest Transformers one of the 10 highest-grossing films worldwide of all time,” Paramount chairman and CEO Brad Grey said in a statement.
