WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Transformers: Beast Wars #4, by Erik Burnham, Josh Burcham and Jake M. Wood, on sale now.

The newest take on the Beast Wars section of the Transformers mythology has for the most part been a fairly accurate update of the original cartoon. Optimus Primal, Dinobot, Cheetor and Megatron are all there, along with a few new faces to keep things fresh for older fans. It's where the plot will take this characters, however, that seems to be the most original.

The story so far has hit the expected beats, with Dinobot seceding from the Predacons to join their more noble counterparts. The path to Dinobot's desertion is different than normal, however, and it speaks to how questionable of a leader this version of Megatron is. With troops leaving or questioning him at every turn, it seems that the Predacon leader may not stay in that role for very long.

Fall of Megatron

Megatron, as mentioned, has had several setbacks in the series' first few issues, namely in relation to people questioning his leadership. Though fans of the beloved show and even its more maligned sequel Beast Machines see this incarnation of Megatron as the evil leader's most diabolical and Machiavellian variant, but so far, he's yet to fully live up to that legend.

Dinobot deserted Megatron and his Predacons due to how savage and barbaric they were. Likewise, upon seeing how valiant, noble and intelligent Nyx was in defiance of her torture, Dinobot assumed that the rest of the Maximals must be the same way and left to join them. During said torture, Nyx blatantly disrespected Megatron, telling him that he was nothing more than a pale imitation of the Decepticon leader whose name who took. Dinobot even tried to get Skold to come along with him when he left. Dinobot also suggests that both Skold and Tarantulas are smarter than Megatron.

Things become even worse for him in this issue, however, when even comparatively loyal soldiers begin to question his command. Megatron and the other Predacons exit the Darksyde and begin the hunt for both Nyx and the traitorous Dinobot. Megatron orders Skold and Tarantulas to go with him to look for Dinobot, but the female turtle Transformer quickly recalls how easily Dinobot beat most of them in the last issue. While Tarantulas urges her to quiet her discontentment with Megatron's orders, this only goes to show how quickly his grip is slipping on his troops.

War of the Predacons

Megatron isn't quite the fearsome ruler that he usually is, which is likely why his troops are so quick to question his judgement. In the show, Dinobot's desertion was caused by his being beaten beforehand by Scorponok. The Predacons instead being the one's trounced by him in this continuity is likely part of why they've so quickly lost respect for him.

Likewise, it's Tarantulas that tries to get Skold to quiet her concerns to Megatron, but if he's like his usual portrayal, he's a traitor in wait, himself. In other words, things are so bad that even someone who intends to stab Megatron in the back is comparatively loyal next to his other minions. There's also Terrorsaur, who's essentially this Megatron's equivalent to Starscream. That leaves the pathetic Waspinator as the only truly loyal Predacon troop that Megatron has!

This could likely result in Skold, Terrorsaur and even Tarantulas teaming up to try to take Megatron out themselves and form their own band of Predacons. This would certainly diverge from the show's events, all while keeping things fresh on older fans on their toes. Megatron's own forces could be bolstered by other Predacons from the show or original toyline being introduced, as it's obvious that the villain needs all the help that he can get.
