WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Transformers/Back to the Future #1 by Cavan Scott, Juan Samu, David Garcia Cruz, and Neil Uyetake, available now.

While The Transformers war between the Autobots and Decepticons has spilled over into the world of humanity for years, and now it has landed right in the middle of Back to the Future's Hill Valley. More precisely, the Decepticons just happened to be in the mall parking lot in Hill Valley at exactly 1:18 A.M. on October 26th, 1985. This just happens to be the exact time that Marty McFly inadvertently activated the time machine inside of Doc Brown's DeLorean. And before the end of the issue, that DeLorean becomes another Transformer in the Autobots and Deceptacons' war.

While the original Back to the Future film sees Marty accidentally send himself back in time by 30 years and into possible futures in its sequels, this version of the story leads our protagonist down far stranger roads. After the Decepticons Rumble and Ravage witnesses the DeLorean traveling through time for himself, and the Decepticons determine exactly what it is that just happened, Megatron orders the DeLorean captured and returned to him as quickly as possible, with the obvious allure of time travel being a trump card that Megatron can't pass up, he is entirely dedicated to getting his hands on the machine.

Before Rumble and Ravage can get to the DeLorean, though, they are stopped just in the nick of time by the fan-favorite Autobot Bumblebee. While Doc and Marty don't see the three robots duking it out, they hear the noise from it and go investigate. When they arrive on the scene, though, all they find are a parked yellow bug and a loose cassette tape in the street. With all apparent threats dealt with and the coast clear, Doc Brown finally gets in his four-wheeled time machine and sets off for the future, shocking Bumblebee, who was waiting in the wings and witnessed the vehicle disappear into the timeline.

After an exhausted Marty goes to bed, he's awoken to a strange new world. And when he gets outside, he finds that his former neighborhood has been transformed, seemingly overnight, into a totalitarian hellscape wherein humanity is lorded over by the Decepticons.

As his family is corralled and forced to mine Energon cubes, Marty decides to make a stand against the Decepticons and their human collaborators. He hurls a trashcan lid at Starscream, who is overseeing the worksite and draws the ire of the Decepticon lieutenant. While being chased and fired upon by Starscream, Marty is rescued by the sudden and unexpected appearance of Doc Brown's DeLorean launching from the timeline and directly into the path of the oncoming Starscream.

When Marty runs to the car and yells thanks at Doc for saving him and coming to repair whatever damage they did, the DeLorean begins contorting itself and reveals itself to be a robot in disguise. Marty, clutching his skateboard and ready to fight for his life, is greeted with a friendly and familiar "Great Scott!"

Back to the Future Transformers 1

When Marty tells the newly sentient and anthropomorphic DeLorean that it isn't Doc Brown, the DeLorean responds that it isn't, but it knows who Marty is, and it needs his help to save the future and everything else. And, while this might be the first time that Marty McFly has seen the DeLorean standing tall and proud, it isn't necessarily a new sight to behold for fans of either franchise. To coincide with the 35th anniversary of the Back to the Future franchise, Hasbro announced that it would be releasing a limited edition Transformers DeLorean, which also reveals gives the machine an Autobot name: Gigawatt.

With Doc Brown's goggles and cadence, as well as a flux capacitor built into its chest, Gigawatt will undoubtedly be one of the most unusual Autobots in Transformers history, but there's no telling how strange things could get if this crossover takes Marty back to a Deceptacon-controlled future.
