In addition to the Halloween season, October is packed with fan-friendly events, including New York Comic-Con and the second annual DC FanDome, to tease upcoming television and film projects to keep audiences riveted in the weeks and months to come. And while DC FanDome is keeping its cards close to the chest for another week, there are plenty of huge trailers helping ring in the return of NYCC this past week. There's a huge wave of anime coming to Crunchyroll and plenty of television and film premieres on Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max and Netflix.
Here are all the biggest trailers, teasers and promos released during the first full week of October 2021.
Ascendance of a Bookworm
The fantasy light novel series Ascendance of a Bookworm, by Miya Kazuki and Yu Shiina, is getting a third season for its popular anime adaptation next year. A new trailer has protagonist Myne continue to work towards her lifelong dream of printing her own books so she can get lost in their literary worlds after being reincarnated in the body of a young girl in a world with a notable scarcity of books.
Directed by Mitsuru Hongo, Ascendance of a Bookworm Season 3 premieres in 2022, with a simulcast expected through Crunchyroll.
Blade Runner: Black Lotus
The cyberpunk world of Blade Runner is about to get a lot bigger with the upcoming CG anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus, coming to Adult Swim and Crunchyroll next month. The latest trailer for the series introduces a female replicant named Elle who awakens in Los Angeles, set between the events of the classic original film and its sequel, Blade Runner: 2049, as Elle moves to rediscover her past.
Directed by Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama, Blade Runner: Black Lotus premieres Nov. 14 on Adult Swim and Crunchyroll.
Demon Slayer
After an enormously successful first season, Demon Slayer is returning for its second season this month, doubling down on the epic, fantasy action. Continuing to adapt Hayatoru Gotouge's bestselling manga series, Season 2 will draw from the Entertainment District story arc as the female demon Daki makes her full introduction to serve as one of the season's primary antagonists.
Directed by Haruo Sotozaki, Demon Slayer Season 2 premieres Oct. 10 and will be available to stream through Crunchyroll and Funimation.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero
The latest Dragon Ball Super anime film, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, has released a first look at the movie's footage in an exciting teaser trailer. Featuring a CG animation style while evoking franchise creator Akira Toriyama's designs, the teaser shows a young Pan powering up while scheming figures appear to target Vegeta and Majin Buu for reasons unknown. Meanwhile, Piccolo comes under attack.
Written by Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is set to premiere in 2022.
Dune
After premiering in select overseas territories, Dune is coming to North American theaters and HBO Max this month as universally acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve adapts Frank Herbert's seminal science fiction novel. The film's final theatrical trailer highlights the expansive cast, as Paul Atreides and his family prepare to travel to the desert planet Arrakis and maintain over its vital flow of spice.
Directed and co-written by Denis Villeneuve, Dune opens in theaters and on HBO Max Oct. 22.
Eternals
The latest promo for Eternals serves as a quick showcase on the race of ancient demigods that have been living on Earth across the entire history of humanity. Unleashing a dazzling array of superpowers as they prepare to face the rise of the Deviants following the events of Avengers: Endgame, the ambitious Marvel Cinematic Universe film is set to bring together one of the MCU's biggest secrets after millennia of living in the shadows.
Directed and co-written by Chloe Zhao, Eternals opens in theaters Nov. 5.
The Expanse
The widely acclaimed science fiction television series The Expanse is coming to an end with its sixth season this December, with a new trailer heralding the series' return to Amazon Prime Video. With the entire solar system at war, the Free Navy has launched devastating asteroid attacks upon Earth and Mars while Marine Bobbie Draper is dispatched on a mission that could turn the tide of the war.
Developed for television by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, The Expanse Season 6 premieres Dec. 10 on Amazon Prime Video.
House of the Dragon
The Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon has unveiled its first footage in a teaser trailer, bringing audiences back to the dark fantasy continent of Westeros and its dueling kingdoms. Set two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, the prequel teases a world with more courtly intrigue and, true to its title, even more dragons than its predecessor as the different houses vie for control of the Iron Throne.
Created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal, House of the Dragon premieres in 2022 on HBO and HBO Max.
Locke & Key
While the Locke family continues to acclimate to the strange, deadly secrets behind their ancestral home of Keyhouse, a new magical key is forged as Locke & Key returns for its second season on Netflix just in time for Halloween. Adapting the Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez comic book series of the same name, the Locke family must contend with a dangerous, new antagonist while still learning about the circumstances behind the murder of Rendell Locke.
Developed for television by Carlton Cuse, Meredith Averill and Aron Eli Coleite, Locke & Key Season 2 premieres Oct. 22 on Netflix.
Lost in Space
Netflix's acclaimed reboot of the classic sci-fi television series Lost in Space is coming to an end with its third and final season this December. A teaser trailer for the final season has a guilt-stricken Will Robinson mourning the fact that he was unable to act fast enough to save his family. The footage from the upcoming season teases an epic finale as the Robinson family continues to search for a way home.
Developed for television by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, Lost in Space Season 3 premieres Dec. 1 on Netflix.
Miss Kuroitsu from the Monster Development Department
Hiroaki Mizusaki's acclaimed manga series Miss Koroitsu from the Monster Development Department is getting its own anime adaptation early next year. The series follows its eponymous protagonist as she works for research and development in superhuman abilities as part of a villainous organization plotting to use monsters to take over the world. And despite such nefarious, global stakes, it's all just another day at the office for Miss Koroitsu.
Directed by Hisashi Saito, Miss Kuroitsu from the Monster Development Department premieres Jan. 8 in Japan.
Resident Alien
After a well-received inaugural season, Resident Alien is returning to Syfy for its second season soon, with a first look trailer teasing Harry's latest antics back in the small town of Patience, Colorado. After deciding to spare humanity after befriending several of Patience's residents, the cast of the acclaimed sci-fi comedy series hints that the stakes are even higher moving forward as Harry returns to Earth.
Created by Chris Sheridan, Resident Alien Season 2 is set to premiere on Syfy, with its premiere date currently unannounced.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City
As the Resident Evil franchise celebrates its 25th anniversary, the iconic survival horror video game series is getting a reboot this November with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. The trailer evokes classic moments and characters from the first two installments of the franchise as Claire and Chris Redfield investigate the nefarious Umbrella Corporation before all hell breaks loose, unleashing hordes of undead on the unsuspecting Midwestern town.
Written and directed by Johannes Roberts, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City opens in theaters Nov. 24.
Riverdale
Riverdale is coming out of the gate swinging for its upcoming sixth season, kicking off with a five-episode event that has the small town, full of dark, bloody secrets, descend into the occult. Cheryl Blossom prepares to launch an occult ritual that may impact the entire community and, with Sabrina Spellman confirmed to appear in Riverdale this season, Cheryl may be tampering with forces far more powerful than she is prepared for.
Developed for television by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Riverdale Season 6 premieres Nov. 16 on The CW.
The Spine of Night
Just in time for Halloween, the animated film The Spine of the Night promises a dark fantasy tale full of mayhem and magic and boasts an impressive voice cast over classic, rotoscoped-style animation. After premiering earlier this year at SXSW, the trailer teases some of the gory carnage set to unfold as the fearsome powers of a magical flower, known as the Sacred Bloom, are unleashed.
Written and directed by Philip Gelatt and Morgan Galen King, The Spine of Night will be released in theaters and on digital HD Oct. 29.
The 355
Filmmaker Simon Kinberg is reuniting with Jessica Chastain, heading an all-star ensemble of badass spies in the upcoming espionage flick The 355. Chastain stars as CIA operative Mace Brown, who teams up with international spies to recover a top-secret weapon that could tip the balance of power in the free world in a globe-trotting epic that teases action-packed stakes and thrills.
Directed, produced and co-written by Simon Kinberg, The 355 opens in theaters Jan. 7.
