The action figure and statue companies offered yet another eclectic week of news and reveals. Big screen heroes and villains like Black Panther, Boba Fett and Darth Vader scored new pieces while TV favorites “Game of Thrones” and “Fear the Walking Dead” earned new action figures and other collectibles. Even classics like Terminator, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Masters of the Universe and Frankenstein shared some time in the spotlight!
CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR | It’s a great time to a Black Panther fan these days. The new comic from Ta-Nehisi Coates and Brian Stelfreeze just launched and the character will make big screen debut in “Captain America: Civil War”on May 6. The latest action figure based on the character takes its cues from that iteration, portrayed by Chadwick Boseman. The 12-inch-tall figure comes ready to stand on Iron Man’s side and throw down with the likes of Winter Soldier thanks to a variety of battle-ready, swap-out hands.
STAR WARS | Every Star Wars fan has dreamed of hanging out with their favorite characters from the movies. Thanks to Sideshow Collectibles’ Life-Size Figures, now you can! Well, that is if you want a 6.5-foot-tall Boba Fett and have an extra $8500 to spend. If you do, you can’t go wrong with this piece that looks perfectly recreated from the films and even features a light-up display on the chest and in the base.
STAR WARS | Hey look, it’s that other armored villain from the original trilogy everyone loves, Darth Vader! This foot-tall ARTFX statue from Kotobukiya looks like it stepped right out of “A New Hope.” The boy formerly known as Anakin is made from PVC and ships in October.
MIGHTY JAXX XXRAY | Have you ever what goes on inside your favorite heroes? Well, thanks to Kid Robot’s Mighty Jaxx XXRAY line of DC vinyl collectibles we have a pretty good idea. Designed by Josh Freeny, these pieces show half hero and half insides of Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman in their New 52 costumes.
FEAR THE WALKING DEAD | There’s an old saying that goes, “Never mess with a mom protecting her family during the early days of a zombie apocalypse.” Don’t look it up, just trust us. If any character has every fully embodied that idea it’s Madison Clark from the companion series “Fear the Walking Dead.” McFarlane Toys celebrates the character with a figure that will hit later this summer. She’s dressed in her Season One costume and comes with ball peen hammer and fire extinguisher.
ONE:12 COLLECTIVE | The more One:12 Collective action figures from Mezco the better! The company seems to agree with that idea as well as you can see by the pre-order for Frankenstein and the preview of Green Arrow offered on the blog. The former comes in black and white with multiple heads, hands and shackles while the latter offers concept art as well as a look at the character’s head and hood.
GAME OF THRONES | Can’t wait for the April 24 return of “Game of Thrones?” Then Funko has plenty of collectibles to keep you a bit busy until then. Cute might not be a word often associated with the HBO show, but it’s the perfect one to describe Dorbz wave which includes Ned Stark, Tyrion Lannister, Jon Snow, Night King and Daenerys. Meanwhile, the third series of blind-boxed Mystery Minis will also debut with new and favorite characters.
“Game of Thrones” also ushers in a brand new line at Funko called Action Figures. We saw a preview at Toy Fair, but this is basically a synthesis of the ReAction figures and the Legacy ones. The 3.75-inch line kicks off with Jon Snow, Samwell Tarly, Ghost, Ygritte, Tormund Giantsbane, Rattleshirt, Styr, White Walker and Night King. A The Wall display stand will also be available with a Tyrion Lannister figure that can actually hold 25 figures in this scale!
TERMINATOR 2 | “Terminator 2” didn’t just wow audiences because of its huge step up when it comes to special effects, but also because it put a teen boy front and center in the action. John Connor might come off a bit whiny watching the film now, but back in 1991 he was the coolest around. Love of the film spread out into action figures and video games, so it makes sense that NECA worked their 8-bit paint magic on a figure of the T-800 from the NES video game based on the film!
MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE CLASSICS | The latest batch of Mattycollector-exclusive Masters of the Universe Classics figures might have gone on sale yesterday, but there still might be hope to pick up new figures of Blast Attack, Clamp Champ, Geldor or Serpentine King Hssss. Only subscribers will be able to get the cartoon version of Trap Jaw or Anti-Eternia He-Man (at least on this first run, we all know they’ll be for sale in the secondary market not long after).
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES | No matter which form of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles you’re most familiar with, you know the gnawing trouble that is the Mouser. These two-legged beasts with huge jaws continue to menace the Heroes on the the Half Shell and can now do so when it comes to your 1/6th scale Mondo action figures as well. Right in scale with the Turtles, the 4-inch toys come with a shocking 20 points of articulation and ship toward the end of the year.
