During the events of the first movie, Buzz was convinced that he was a real space ranger, unlike the other toys who seemed to have known they were toys right from the start. After spending time with Woody and coming to grips with the truth, the two became close friends, and Buzz gained a new purpose in life, to be the best toy he can be so that he can make a child happy. But there were a few changes made to his character by the time the second film rolled around. Though there were many similarities as well.

10 Different: Buzz Was Completely Unfamiliar With Earth

Buzz, operating with the knowledge of a spaceman from a distant planet, had to learn about Earth through the other toys and by seeing things himself. He knew nothing about the atmosphere or if it was safe for him to breathe. He was also unfazed by the colorful cast of inhabitants, which was a wide variety of different toys, including a talking potato.

Buzz would also confuse Sid with his dog. In the second movie, he seems more accustomed to life on Earth, although he pronounces words like "smores" incorrectly at times.

He instantly rushed over to help Woody when he asked for help and assisted the other toys with their problems. He was also eager to save Woody when he was kidnapped, and even risked his life by crossing a busy street while lifting a traffic cone.

8 Different: Buzz Originally Didn't Think He Was A Toy

Buzz tries to contact Star Command

Buzz spent the majority of the first film thinking that he was a true space ranger from the Intergalactic Alliance. Despite the fact that he couldn't get into contact with Star Command, Woody constantly told him that he was a toy, his laser never worked, and the words "Made In Taiwan" were on his suit, Buzz lived in his delusion until he saw a commercial advertising toys like him.

By the second film, he was embarrassed by his misguided beliefs and actions in the past, and he had a hard time looking at other Buzz Lightyear toys who acted the way that he used to.

7 Same: Buzz Was Very Nimble On His Feet

Although Buzz couldn't fly or do any of the things a space ranger normally could do, he was always very agile. Not only could he fall with style, but he could avoid danger by rolling away. He used this technique to get out of the way of a moving vehicle.

Buzz was also very powerful, to the point where he was able to push a crate and a toolbox off of Woody while he had a rocket strapped to his back.

6 Different: No One Humored Him After The First Film

Buzz tries to decode Al's license plate

When Buzz first arrived in Andy's bedroom, everyone was impressed by him. Buzz had a lot of charisma, and they were all willing to go along with his belief that he wasn't a toy like them. They even helped him repair his supposed spaceship.

Once Buzz embraced the fact that he was a toy, they had less patience for his odd actions. When he was decoding Al's license plate, everyone just groaned at him and left until he discovered Woody was at Al's Toy Barn.

5 Same: Buzz Considered Woody To Be His Best Friend

Woody decides to stay with Andy

After Woody saved Buzz's life from Sid in the first film, Buzz considered the cowboy doll to be his best friend. Woody and Buzz worked together to get back to Andy, as they refused to leave each other behind. In the second film, Buzz didn't hesitate to stick out his neck for Woody.

When Woody was cornered after telling Stinky Pete not to talk badly of his friend, Buzz showed up just in time to save him. They both agreed that even when Andy grew up, they would always be there for each other.

4 Different: Buzz Learned The Importance Of Being A Toy

When Buzz discovered that he was a toy, he did not take it well. He thought that his existence was worthless if he wasn't a space ranger, and fell into a deep sadness, unable to will himself to help Woody or to even react to the dangers around him.

However, he regained his sense of purpose after a heart-to-heart talk with Woody, and learned that toys exist to make children happy. He stated that it was a noble job, and Buzz took this to heart and reminded Woody of his words in the second film.

3 Same: Buzz Is Fearless In The World Outside Of Andy's House

Although Woody was panicking most of the time he was outside of Andy's house, Buzz didn't react with the same fear. He believed that he had explored numerous planets before Earth, and was well-equipped to handle any danger that came his way.

He only seemed unnerved by Sid and his dog, but he never allowed his fear to trip him up. When rescuing Woody, he never seemed to fear the possibility of never being able to return to Andy's house and even drove a car.

2 Different: Buzz Couldn't Care Less About Emperor Zurg

Emperor Zurg stands in the darkness

Thanks to the fact that Buzz had the memories of the real Buzz Lightyear, he would have treated Emperor Zurg like an enemy if he met him during the first film. In the second film, Buzz didn't feel threatened by Emperor Zurg.

He had reacted to his appearance in a video game with mild amusement, and he didn't attempt to challenge the Zurg toy that appeared.

1 Same: Buzz Questions Woody's Actions When Necessary

Buzz yells at Woody

Buzz was usually the voice of reason when it came to morality, even when he wasn't rooted in reality. Unlike the other toys, Buzz never hesitated to talk back to Woody. Woody needed someone to be blunt with him, as he was just as susceptible to lose sight of what is important as Buzz was.

When Buzz told Woody that being in a glass case looking at children was nothing compared to watching Andy grow up, Woody finally realized that his decision to go to Japan wasn't the right one.
