Toradora! is a slice-of-life anime that's relatively well-known for its moments either feeling humorously over-the-top or so down-to-earth and relatable that they still sting no matter how many times fans re-watch or try to prepare for them. There are a few arcs sprinkled in that can be somewhat hit-or-miss, like Ryuuji helping Taiga stalk her crush to take photos of him without his consent. Thankfully, though, most are incredibly well-written and emotional.

Between the talent show, beach trip, and ski resort arcs, there's no shortage of heartbreak, drama, and insight that tends to stick with many viewers, even long after they've finished the series. Slice-of-life anime also tend to do this extraordinarily well, thanks to them having so many similarities to viewers' real lives.

10 Continuing To Step Forward

Continuing forward on the path of life can be incredibly frightening at times, even when it seems like everything is clearly laid out for someone. This is the case with Kitamura, who starts to question if he wants to pursue being the Student Council President when his crush - the current President - was transferring away.

Kitamura tried to give up everything he'd worked for, but Sumire Kano firmly set him straight with a quote that's hard to forget even today. "Haven't you already lifted your foot, preparing to step forward? Then you only have one option! Finish taking that step!"

9 Someone Watching Over

Taiga always puts up a brave, intimidating front to hide the scared, neglected child she is inside. Her father left her alone for his new wife, whom Taiga would previously argue with constantly, but all of her emotional issues were toned down around Christmas.

Telling the others around her that she wanted to be 'a good girl for Santa,' Taiga then further explained herself to Ryuuji with a quote that's both heart-warming and heart-wrenching: "It doesn't matter if you grew up without parents, and it doesn't matter if you don't believe in God. There's someone out there watching over you."

8 Self-Made Happiness

Minori is always shown working as hard as she can, without ever losing her cheerful demeanor, but it isn't because she's eternally happy. It's revealed to actually be the complete opposite. She did as much as she possibly could with a brave, smiling face in the hopes of finding how to make herself happy.

This comes to a head when Minori essentially sacrifices her love for Ryuuji so that Taiga can have a happy future with him. When she tries to reject, Minori replies, "My happiness can only be...can only be made with my own hands! My happiness doesn't depend on anybody but me!"

7 Apologies & Forgiveness

When people get heated and let emotions boil over into full-blown arguments, they can end up hurting each other to protect their own stubborn pride. Originally, it seems like Taiga is one of those characters, but over time with some guidance from Ryuuji, she starts to learn the value of making up with others.

After Ryuuji and Minori have a falling out, it's actually Taiga who tries to mend their relationship. She says "It's not about being right or being wrong. There are more important things than that. That's why apologies and forgiveness become necessary."

6 Unbalanced Adoration

One shouldn't meet their idols, if only because the actualized person will never be able to live up to the fantasy of them the fan built up in their heads. At one point, Ami - the more mature model of the series - speaks up on this, while lecturing Ryuuji on how he'd been idealizing Minori while crushing on her.

It's clear to the highly perceptive Ami that Ryuuji loves the idea of Minori and not her true, full character. She calls him out on this by bluntly stating that "Adoration never leads to a balanced relationship."

5 Recognizing The Little Things

At one point, Minori mentions that Ryuuji is really good at doing little everyday things for Taiga, like sewing her clothes when they rip or preparing lunches for her so she doesn't sustain herself on convenience store meals. He replies that those things are 'really no big deal,' but Minori has a much more realistic view of things.

Those 'little things' are ones that most people wouldn't bother to do for each other unless they truly cared. Being able to see this, she responds by saying that "It's those 'no big deal' things that matter the most."

4 The Slow Creep Of Loneliness

Sometimes, one can be incredibly lonely - or at least suffering from the effects of loneliness - without fully realizing it themselves. Such is the case with Ami. She was so absorbed in following in her mother's famous footsteps and gaining success, it didn't truly hit her that she was deeply, desperately craving connections and for someone to really understand her until after she met Ryuuji.

Ami opens up to him during one conversation as she tries to question her own feelings, stating that "I'd never really questioned whether I was lonely or not."

3 Tripping In Life

When people are young and trip while playing, they might walk away with a scrape or bruise, but for the most part, they're fine. However, as people get older, the kinds of 'trips' that happen to them throughout life become more painful and harder to recover from.

Minori reflects on this near the end of the series, saying that "If you trip while running down a hallway, you'll get a nosebleed. If you trip in life, you cry."

2 Unclear Future

When a person doesn't have any idea what they want to do in life, even the tiniest of decisions can feel overwhelming, such as what they want to do that evening for simple enjoyment. Making any sort of decision can then lead to more frustration, especially if other people are shoving them forward as if it should be easy for them.

Taiga comments on this frustration in a way that hits incredibly hard, asking "How can I know what I want to do later when I don't even know what I want to do right now?"

1 Feeling Needed

Due to how she was raised and the sort of home environment she lived in, Taiga developed a complex of being a burden to those around her. It isn't mentioned much, but she does bring up that it's why she couldn't stay with her mother at the end of the series. However, throughout the series, Ryuuji supplies her with nothing but reassurance, which helps her grow.

Taiga shows a relatable amount of gratitude for his actions as well, stating "Having someone saying you're okay and being needed by that person...It was nice to have someone like that."
