As Goku and the Z Fighters seek out the strongest opponents in the multiverse, Dragon Ball Super has introduced a whole host of powerful new antagonists to the iconic Dragon Ball canon. This ongoing quest culminated in the Tournament of Power, the climactic storyline to the anime series. The final story arc had the 15 dimensions within the Dragon Ball Multiverse each bringing their 10 best martial artists for an epic contest, with losing realities erased from existence by the Grand Zeno overseeing the tournament and the winner getting to make a wish with the all-powerful Super Dragon Balls.
One of the most formidable rivals to Universe 7's Z Fighters was Toppo, who his team into gray and lasted the longest of his team in the battles that followed. Now, we're taking a closer look at this burly, no-nonsense warrior.
WHO IS TOPPO?
Toppo, or Top as he's also referred to, is one of the most powerful fighters to come from Universe 11. He is obsessed with justice, honor and duty, Toppo leads the Pride Troopers, a peace-keeping force that ensures order and justice throughout all of Universe 11, with the Universe 11 team consisting entirely of Toppo and his best Troopers.
After a fighter named Jiren turned down the opportunity to train to become Universe 11's next God of Destruction, Toppo was selected for the position instead, and he continues his training throughout Dragon Ball Super. While possessing a short temper, Toppo is also incredible respectful, even to most of his opponents, while dubbing most of his special moves with some variety of "justice," including the Justice Flash.
HOW STRONG IS TOPPO?
Second only to Jiren among the mortal warriors of Universe 11 in raw power, Toppo's combat strength has not only made him the candidate to eventually succeed Belmod as his reality's God of Destruction, but also serve as his personal bodyguard. Despite his size, Toppo is deceptively fast and has a whole array of special attacks to keep his opponents at bay.
In his base state, Toppo is able to easily overpower Goku in his Super Saiyan form and, later, fights Goku to a standstill after Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan Blue. Additionally, Toppo can tap into his fledgling godly power levels when angered or desperate, causing him to gain a purple-pink energy aura that significantly increases his combat strength and easily overpowers Frieza in his Golden form.
Toppo in the Tournament of Power
While leading his fellow Pride Troopers into the Tournament of Power, Toppo becomes increasingly desperate as he watches his teammates gradually become eliminated from the contest of champions. Following the elimination of Kunshi and realizing the fate of everything he's sworn to protect is at stake, Toppo vows to abandon his own strict moral code if necessary to emerge victorious from the tournament.
This comes to pass when Toppo battles against Frieza, enraged by how evil and cruel his opponent is. Tapping into his God of Destruction potential, Toppo beats Frieza within an inch of his life only for Android 17 and Vegeta to intervene. Disgusted that Toppo abandoned his principles, Vegeta battles Toppo alone but is nearly overpowered himself. Determined to protect the lives of his family, Vegeta nearly sacrifices himself with the Final Explosion technique, but narrowly survives and succeeds in eliminating Toppo. After watching the remainder of the tournament from the sidelines, Toppo befriends the usually stoic and solitary Jiren after they return to their home universe after Android 17 restores it using the Super Dragon Balls.
