Between the events of Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, it appeared that the practice of metalbending -- once thought impossible -- had become somewhat commonplace. In the world of the Four Nations, that is in no small part thanks to Toph Beifong, who discovered metalbending.

Now her story continues in the upcoming graphic novel, Avatar: The Last Airbender - Toph Beifong's Metalbending Academy, from Dark Horse Comics. Written by Faith Erin Hicks and illustrated by Peter Wartman and Adele Matera, the book takes place after the events of the original animated series and sees Toph running an academy, and being bored by it. Things turn around when Sokka, Suki and others visit.

Dark Horse has stated that the upcoming graphic novel is the "ultimate continuation" of the show. Series writer and producer Tim Hedrick, who wrote episodes such as "The Deserter," "City of Walls and Secrets" and "The Puppetmaster," is also involved.

Toph was fully introduced in the Season 2 episode "The Blind Bandit" of Avatar: The Last Airbender, though she briefly appears in "The Swamp." Because of her blindness, she is able to connect to the earth in a unique way, giving her an advantage as an earthbender and allowing her to discover metalbending. After the events of the series, she establishes and leads the Metalbending Police Force in Republic City, which employs the new earthbending practice, as seen in Legend of Korra.

Avatar: The Last Airbender — Toph Beifong's Metalbending Academy is scheduled to hit shelves Feb. 16, 2021. It is currently available for pre-order.
