Top Gun: Maverick has officially grossed more in its domestic first-run than Titanic, Paramount Pictures' all-time highest-grossing film.

According to a report from Deadline, Top Gun: Maverick's domestic first-run release numbers are $601.9 million against Titanic's $600.7 million. This is Paramount's best year since 2014, as they have raked in nearly $1 billion in sales. The landmark achievement reflects the duo of director Joseph Kosinski and headliner Tom Cruise, both of whom previously collaborated for the 2013 sci-fi film Oblivion.

Celebrating the box office success of Top Gun: Maverick, Paramount Pictures President and CEO Brian Robbins said "Top Gun: Maverick is a phenomenal motion picture, and we take deep pride in celebrating this tremendous achievement alongside Tom Cruise, our filmmakers and cast, our marketing and distribution teams, and, o course, all the new and original Top Gun fans, without whom this wouldn't have been possible."

With a total of approximately $1.006 billion in earnings worldwide, Maverick is the first Tom Cruise film to reach the billion-dollar mark. The film also earned over $40 million in its fourth weekend in theaters, which is a rare honor that has only been achieved by three other films in history: Avatar, which brought in $50.3 million that weekend, Star Wars: The Force Awakens with 42.4 million and Black Panther, which earned $40.8 million.

The success may not stop here. Maverick star Miles Teller revealed that Tom Cruise has been discussing a potential sequel. "I've been having some conversations with him about it," he said. "We'll see."

Despite the passing of months, Maverick is still at theaters, where it will likely remain for the foreseeable future. According to Paramount President and CEO of Streaming Tom Ryan, Paramount is planning to keep Maverick in theaters for the time being. "I think a year or so ago," he explained, "there was a lot of discussion about what the right model was for movies to streaming, and we were one of the first, if not the first, to come out with the 45-day post theatrical, which gives a lot of value to the marketing of content and allows you to give it a great theatrical exclusive window, but then bring it quickly to streaming." He added that, for Maverick, "We haven't decided on that [theatrical window] yet."

Top Gun: Maverick, the long-awaited sequel to the 1986 smash hit Top Gun, is playing at theaters now.
