Despite the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and its effect on the cinema industry, Paramount Pictures intends to keep Top Gun: Maverick on its current July release date.
"We have no plans to move our theatrical release of Top Gun," Paramount president of distribution Chris Aronson told THR. "I think the next two months are critical, and whether the new administration can implement a robust vaccination plan. If Biden’s 100 million vaccines in 100 days works, then I think we’ll be in good shape."
Top Gun: Maverick was originally slated to premiere on June 26, 2020 before Paramount moved its release date to December 2020. Paramount later pushed the release date to July 2021, placing Top Gun: Maverick right at the beginning of the summer movie season. Paramount has shifted other films, including A Quiet Place: Part II and G.I. Joe Origins: Snake-Eyes.
Paramount will revamp its CBS All Access streaming service with a new title in March: Paramount+. Paramount+ will feature "a mountain of entertainment" including original shows and content from Paramount's parent company ViacomCBS, including CBS and Nickelodeon.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski from a screenplay by Ehren Kruger and Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie, Top Gun: Maverick stars Tom Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, Val Kilmer, Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Manny Jacinto, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez and Jay Ellis. The film arrives in theaters July 2, 2021.
