Tom Cruise's Maverick has found a new wingman.

Fantastic Four actor Miles Teller has officially been cast as Goose's son in the upcoming Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Teller is the first new cast member to be announced for the production, joining Cruise and Val Kilmer who both reprise their roles from the classic 1986 original film. Teller won the part over fellow casting finalists Nicholas Hoult and Glen Powell who all screen tested opposite Cruise last week.

Goose, played by Anthony Edwards, was Maverick's best friend and wingman in the first film who died in a tragic accident leaving behind his wife and young son. His death sent Maverick on a self-destructive spiral of guilt before the hotshot fighter pilot straightened himself out and take to the skies once more.

Details on the new Top Gun are currently under wraps but Teller's character will reportedly take his father's place as Maverick's newest wingman and protege in an era when fighter pilots are steadily being replaced by drone aircraft. Filming for the sequel officially began at the end of May.
