Top Gun: Maverick has passed Marvel's The Avengers to become the ninth-highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office.

According to Variety, the Paramount Pictures blockbuster now grossed $623.8 million in North America, just more than the $623.3 million The Avengers grossed domestically during its entire theatrical run. Industry experts believe that if Maverick continues to perform exceptionally at the box office, the sequel to 1986's Top Gun could eventually become the seventh-highest-grossing film domestically. The two titles currently standing in Maverick's way are Jurassic World in eighth place with $653 million and Titanic in seventh place with $659 million. It is unlikely that the Top Gun sequel will gross enough in its initial box office run to pass Avengers: Infinity War, which is in sixth place with $678 million.

In addition to its successful box office run domestically, Top Gun: Maverick has earned $620 million internationally for a total worldwide box office of $1.24 billion. The Top Gun sequel is the first movie of 2022 and only the second film since the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic began to cross the $1 billion mark at the box office, the other film being 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. Maverick is also Tom Cruise's first film to cross that coveted billion-dollar mark. Mission: Impossible – Fallout previously held the title of the actor's highest-grossing film, having earned $791.1 million back in 2018.

Will There Be a Top Gun 3?

Paramount has not officially announced a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick, but Miles Teller, who plays LT Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw in the film, has revealed that he has spoken to Cruise about a potential third film in the franchise. "That would be great, but that's all up to TC," Teller said in July 2022 about the possibility of a Maverick sequel. "It's all up to Tom. I've been having some conversations with him about it. We'll see."

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Top Gun: Maverick picks up more than 30 years after the original film and stars Cruise as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, one of the Navy's top aviators. The sequel follows Maverick as he trains a new group of TOPGUN graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen. The film also stars Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman and Ed Harris. Val Kilmer also appears in a cameo, reprising his role from the first film as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky.
