The stars of Fox's X-Men and Fantastic Four movies are reportedly among the frontrunners for a key role in the sequel to Top Gun.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nicholas Hoult, Miles Teller and Glen Powell (Hidden Figures) entered the round of screen tests earlier this week to star as Goose's son opposite Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick. Earlier reports included Dylan O'Brien and Austin Butler linked to the role before this week's testing.

In the 1986 classic, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell's wingman and best friend was Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards. The fighter pilot died in a tragic high-flying accident leaving behind his young wife Carole (Meg Ryan) and son while putting Maverick in a tailspin of guilt and regret. Picking up over thirty years after the original, the upcoming sequel will reunite Maverick with the son of his former wingman.

Production of Top Gun: Maverick began in May, reuniting Cruise with director Joseph Kosinski, who previously worked with the actor in 2013's Oblivion. Former co-star Val Kilmer later confirmed he was joining the production shortly thereafter reprising his iconic role as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky.

With all three actors competing for the role of Goose's son, the sequel is shaping up to be a mix of old and new faces as Cruise returns to the role that made him an international superstar.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Top Gun: Maverick is scheduled for release on July 12, 2019. The film stars returning actors Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer with Cruise producing the sequel along with David Ellison and original producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
