Here you are - the top five superheroes to be mentioned in the lyrics of Bob Dylan songs.
Enjoy!
So Close, Yet So Far Away
Iron Fist
We ALMOST get a mention of Iron Fist in "Ring Them Bells":
Ring them bells St. Peter
Where the four winds blow,
Ring them bells with an iron hand
So the people will know.
Sadly, close doesn't count!!
So Wrong, I Won't Count It
Goliath
Courtesy of "When the Ship Comes In":
Then they'll raise their hands,
Sayin' we'll meet all your demands,
But we'll shout from the bow your days are numbered.
And like Pharaoh's tribe,
They'll be drownded in the tide,
And like Goliath, they'll be conquered.
That is just toooo wrong!! I can't count that!
5. Storm
From "Tight Connection to My Heart (Has Anybody Seen My Love)":
I'm gonna get my coat,
I feel the breath of a storm.
There's something I've got to do tonight,
You go inside and stay warm.
4. Justice
From "I And I":
Took an untrodden path once, where the swift don't win the race,
It goes to the worthy, who can divide the word of truth.
Took a stranger to teach me, to look into justice's beautiful face
And to see an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
I dunno if I would call Justice's face BEAUTIFUL, but I guess he's good looking...
3. Angel
From "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" (Marvel even had a hero CALLED Tom Thumb, but Tom Thumb is not actually mentioned in the lyrics of the song):
And picking up Angel who
Just arrived here from the coast
Who looked so fine at first
But left looking just like a ghost
The best part about this one is that when Angel joined X-Factor, he came in from...yep, you guessed it - the West Coast!
And he was so fine at first, but he ended up looking just like...
2. Jack of Hearts
From, well, obviously, "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts"
The whole song, basically, but I'll pick the best usage of the name, as this verse almost sounds LIKE a superhero set-up...
Big Jim was no one's fool, he owned the town's only diamond mine,
He made his usual entrance lookin' so dandy and so fine.
With his bodyguards and silver cane and every hair in place,
He took whatever he wanted to and he laid it all to waste.
But his bodyguards and silver cane were no match for the Jack of Hearts.
1. Cloak and Dagger
They're #1 only because it seems odder to me that they would come up in a song than Jack of Hearts....
From "Love Minus Zero/No Limit":
The cloak and dagger dangles,
Madams light the candles.
In ceremonies of the horsemen,
Even the pawn must hold a grudge.
Statues made of match sticks,
Crumble into one another,
My love winks, she does not bother,
She knows too much to argue or to judge.
Well, that's my top five!
Agree? Disagree? Let me know!
