It’s a lot like beating a dead horse, but regarding Teen Titans East Special #1 (spoilers after the fold)… who DIDN’T think that as soon as they announced that this would be a one-shot that would lead into a brand new Titans book starring all-different characters, and that the book was written by Judd Winick, that the issue would involve all these minor characters being murdered, save the one notable one (Cyborg)?
Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve said many times in the past that often, by trying to AVOID cliches, writers end up doing bad ideas, just for the sake of saying, “See! You didn’t see THAT coming, did you?,” but I do not believe that “Having a one-shot where we kill off a bunch of minor characters so that we can launch a brand-new book with major characters” is a good enough of an idea to merit the whole obviousness of it all.
Particularly since you do not get the impression that this WAS supposed to seem as obvious as it was.
Heck, the fact that people were smiling on the cover of a Judd Winick superhero comic was probably the biggest clue that it was a woeful attempt to misdirect.
Please note that there is a chance that not all the characters actually died. They were all blasted a bunch, but only a few of them were CLEARLY died – so that’s something, right? Still, it’s the same basic idea – “Start off with X characters, then get rid of them all in the end in a ‘shock’.”
