Tony Stark Meets His Replacement, Riri Williams, in "Invincible Iron Man" #12

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for "Invincible Iron Man" #12, on sale now.

After making her debut this spring in "Invincible Iron Man" #7, Riri Williams has seen her profile rise faster than that of most heroes. Just a few months after her big, question-raising first appearance, it was announced that the new character would take on the mantle of Iron Man and star in a relaunched volume of "Invincible Iron Man" as part of Marvel's Marvel NOW! initiative. The 15-year-old genius M.I.T. student would go from building her own Iron Man suit nearly from scratch, to taking flight in that same armor, to having a new series announced -- and that was all before Riri had even met Tony Stark.

All that changed in this week's "Invincible Iron Man" #12, where writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mike Deodato detail the long awaited meeting between two marvelous minds: Riri Williams and Tony Stark. In the issue, Stark bursts in on a conversation between Riri and her mother following the teen genius' initial test flight in her armored super suit. After all, she she played hero and stopped a few inmates from escaping prison in New Mexico, earning public attention, and some parental concern. Once she showed up on Stark's radar, the Avenger had to check out who was able to reverse engineer one of his high tech suits.

While Riri's mother is understandably worried about her daughter piloting a suit her daughter built and using it to fight crime, Stark understands where Riri is coming from. He recognizes her need to do good and use her skills to help people, as well as the fact that nothing will keep her from doing that. Their meeting ends on a quiet note, with Stark offering to take both Riri and her mother out to dinner.

But that's not where the issue ends; the final page features the return of Stark's surprising new ally, Victor Von Doom. The ex-Doctor Doom's arrival freaks out Mary Jane Watson and Maria Hill, but before either of them can really get a grip on the situation, Von Doom absconds with Tony to an unknown location. Considering Von Doom will himself get his own ongoing series and new armor as part of Marvel NOW! ("Infamous Iron Man"), could this be the start of setup for that upcoming title?

"Invincible Iron Man" #13 is expected to arrive in stores on September 7.
