Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk announced this week that a popular skateboarding trick will feature a new name in the remastered version of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater in honor of the trick's creator. In an extended social media post, Hawk revealed that the "mute" grab will now be referred to as the "Weddle" grab-- a nod to deaf skateboarder Chris Weddle. Back in 1981, Weddle was a prominent amateur skater who became the first person to nail the trick, which involves doing an "Indy" air and grabbing the board with the front hand. Because Weddle was known as the "quiet, mute guy," the trick was originally named the "mute" grab.RELATED: Chipotle Offers Early Access to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2 - If You Buy a Special Burrito

Hawk included a photo of Weddle performing the trick in 2020 and explained, "He has been very gracious in his response but it is obvious that a different name would have honored his legacy, as he is hearing impaired but not lacking speech." He then continued, "I asked him last year as I was diving into trick origins and he said he would have rather named it the 'deaf' or 'Weddle' grab if given the choice. His exact quote to me was, 'I am deaf, not mute'."

While Hawk noted that it will "be challenging to break the habit of saying the old name," he added that Weddle deserved proper recognition. Two other tricks in the game will also be getting new names: the Weddle Backflip and Reacharound Invert, as Weddle was the creator of all three tricks.

The remastered versions of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2 will be available for PS4, Xbox One and PC. They will launch on the Epic Games Store on Sept. 4.
