WARNING: the following contains spoilers for Episode 1 of TONIKAWA: Over the Moon For You, now streaming on Crunchyroll.

In the new anime rom-com TONIKAWA: Over the Moon For You, protagonist Nasa Yuzaki's name suggests a grand future of success. Nasa's name is written the characters meaning "starry sky" and pronounced like the NASA space organization. This drove him to study hard, think about the future and make his parents proud. Then he lost a year of school, and everything fell apart. Now, a mysterious girl is rekindling the flame of ambition in Nasa's heart, sending the pair hurtling towards marital bliss at breakneck speed. So much for slow-paced, slice-of-life anime!

How Naka Suddenly Got Engaged

When the Yuzakis had a baby boy, they decided that their young son was born for greatness, and they gave him a name to match. This had mixed results; in elementary school, Nasa was made fun of for his odd name, and as his older self recalled, every adult chuckled upon hearing it. Nasa was hardly a social outcast because of this, but it did have an impact, and he decided to lean into it. He's stuck with that name, so it was time to truly live up to it. Through elementary school up through the final year of junior high school, Nasa studied hard for his future. By the eve of high school entrance exams, Nasa had top grades and had his sights set on a lofty, elite high school.

One night, under the full moon, Nasa saw a gorgeous girl across the street and wandered over to meet her. Then a truck hit him (almost like an isekai protagonist), and he lay injured on the snowy road. His life was saved; the girl had thrown herself between him and the bus. He fell in love with her at once and accepted her offer to marry right then and there. But Nasa still collapsed, awoke months later, and missed the high school entrance exams. He missed a year, as his teacher had feared, and he took the exams again next year. Despite his top grades and offers for good schools, Nasa had lost all interest. He dropped out and took menial labor jobs instead, his future forgotten and his fianceé missing.

Naka Meets His Mystery Bride

Years later, 18-year-old Nasa Yuzaki was living alone in a modest apartment, saving up all his money and wondering what on earth to do with it (and himself). Then the doorbell rang, and he swung the door open to find the same girl from that truck accident, once again bathed in moonlight. He invited her in, and the girl introduced herself as Tsukasa. Nasa's moonlight goddess was back, and this time, she was ready to make good on their promise: it was time to marry. She even brought the official paperwork and urged Nasa to fill it out. Nasa could hardly believe his luck, though he was a bit flustered, too. Seeing that official paperwork made all this suddenly feel so real, and he hesitated.

It only took a little charm from Tsukasa to get Nasa moving, and he cheerily filled out the paperwork with gusto. Everything had changed so fast; Nasa was suddenly getting a second chance at life and love, and he wasn't going to waste it. Tsukasa had popped right back into his life and turned it upside down, like a magical girl, so now, the fire was back in Nasa's heart, fueled by the companionship of his beloved. Domestic bliss awaits.
