The following contains spoilers for Tomodachi Game Episode 6, "I Really Can't Be Friends with a 'Murderer'" now streaming on Crunchyroll.

Tomodachi Game ramps things up as it finishes out the second round of its paranoia-fueled contest. Yuuichi has successfully trapped Tenji, revealing him as both the villain behind the malicious rumors being spread in the particular activity and the culprit who applied to play the Tomodachi Game in the first place. But just as it seems like true friendship had won the day, a sudden twist separates all but two members of the group from the others. Amid a whirlwind of secrets, this leads to an announcement of murder, followed by an equally dramatic profession of love.

Yuuichi uses the Kageguchi paper to communicate in the Tomodachi Game

The episode opens just after Tenji has been outed as the traitor who subjected everyone to the Tomodachi Game to begin with. Tenji had been forced to confess his betrayal thanks to Yuuichi's ploy, shortly before Yuuichi revealed the intricate details of his plan. Although at first glance, it seemed like the bonds between the friends had been falling apart, Yuuichi had actually been slipping the others messages via the slips of paper used in the game to secretly communicate between them. This allowed him to guide Sawaragi, Kokorogi and Shibe to keep up the ruse while in reality maintaining goodwill between them.

Although he used a process of elimination to recruit each of them, his major power play was that he asked the others to entrust him with their nametags during the game's events. Since letting another player see the debt meter on one's nametag would double the amount owed, allowing someone else to handle them ensures that there would be no betrayal or deviation from the strategy. Of course, Yuuichi momentarily left his own nametag with the others as well to prove his own commitment to the idea.

The management team runs the Tomodachi Game behind the scenes

This sort of tactical thinking is exactly what caught the eye of the administrators watching the Tomodachi Game behind the scenes. The unnamed pair who have been overseeing events have paid special attention to Yuuichi, believing him to be the most analytically savvy among the group. After rewinding the footage of the game to see Yuuichi's plan in motion, one of the judges even compares him to a cult leader due to the fact that he was able to manipulate his friends' actions while leaving them smiling.

However, the most elaborate part of Yuuichi's scheme lies in his final move, taking charge of the very results of the game itself. Up to that point, Sawaragi was left firmly stuck as the closest to the end. Should the contest have continued in that way, according to Tenji's whims, Sawaragi would have been forced into the third game of the Tomodachi Game by herself. However, at the last second, Yuuichi seemingly sacrificed himself to take on that burden. Using a loophole that penalizes any liars during the game, Yuuichi admitted that he had lied in writing that Shibe had killed somebody, shockingly proclaiming that he himself had murdered three people.

This announcement settles the score with Yuuichi moving into the third game, leaving the rest of the team behind, but in doing so, he leaves his friends in chaos. Confused and conflicted by the nature of his confession, Yuuichi may have saved them from having to face any more of the traumatizing games ahead, but he has left each of them in a waking nightmare of mistrust. The logic of Yuuichi's actions at this point remains just as unclear as the events that led him to take the lives of three different people, but the veracity of his claims has already verified the truth of them.

Even so, Episode 6 somehow manages to drop one more surprise before the credits roll. In the discord, Tenji steals Yuuichi's thunder by declaring that he himself had lied as well. Subverting everybody's expectations, Tenji claims that his submission of having been in a romantic relationship with Sawaragi was untrue -- on the grounds that he is allegedly in love with Yuuichi. As evidence for this assertion, Tenji forcibly kisses Yuuichi, winning over the Tomodachi Game's patrons and taking on the same penalty as Yuuichi to move on to the next round.

Surprising though it may be, the usage of a gay kiss as a curveball is almost dubiously regressive, as it reduces the potential of a queer romance to its shock factor. Admittedly, it is possible that Tenji is lying about his affections toward Yuuichi as part of a convoluted move to continue on in the game. Nevertheless, if his advance turns out to be true, it would explain what he meant when he cursed Yuuichi for "making him feel this way," as he said previously.

While this episode may have finally brought the Bad Mouth Board Game to an end, it raises a myriad of new questions in its revelations. Aside from Yuuichi's past and his intent regarding his friends, the management team leaks the fact that Tenji has apparently played a Tomodachi Game before. This would explain his massive debt but creates a mystery regarding whom he played it with and the reason for his previous participation. Yuuichi and Tenji will have to find the answers to these mysteries together as they struggle through their tense partnership in the games to come.
