It’s been an excellent year for rom-com anime, with even more currently in production. From A Couple of Cuckoos to Rent-A-Girlfriend, many breakout series from previous and current years surprisingly don’t belong to the action shonen genre. This means that viewers are equally interested in light shows which offer hilarious stories with unforgettable characters. But every show ends, and viewers are left wanting more of that particular genre with, if not similar, stories of the same theme.

Luckily for romance genre lovers, Tomo-chan Is a Girl! could be the new anime series that could become all the rage. Written and illustrated by Fumita Yanagida, Tomo-chan Is A Girl! is a four-panel manga that Lay-duce will be adapting into a TV anime. It will explore the story of Tomo Aizawa and her friends.

The Plot of Tomo-chan Is a Girl!

Snap of Tomo Aizawa

Tomo Aizawa is a tomboy, not just in looks but with a very ruggish attitude and behaviors. Crunchyroll describes the series as a youthful comedy, and the main focus will be on Tomo and her childhood friend, Junichirou. Most anime watchers would think that the big twist in the plot would be that the guy falls in love with the girl and has a hard time explaining his feelings.

However, in this love story, Tomo is the one who falls for her childhood friend and is unable to explain her feelings because Junichirou sees her as a man. The series will definitely bring back pleasant memories from Ouran High School Host Club. Tomo seems like Haruhi, but unlike Haruhi Fujioka, Tomo is boyish by choice.

The Cast of Tomo-chan Is a Girl!

Tomo and Juni

The trailer describes Tomo-chan as a boyish girl and her friend Juni as a dense boy. It’ll be interesting to see the roles reversed once in a while, as even though Tomo is comfortable being a tomboy, she still wants to prove to Juni that she’s a girl. She might spend most of her time in the series trying to highlight her feminine side, so she can be accepted as a potential love interest.

The supporting cast featured in the trailer includes Misuzu Gundou, who is also Tomo’s childhood friend, and Carol Olston, who is in the same class as the girls. The other cast members are yet to make their on-screen debut.
