Details about the upcoming Tomb Raider title from developer Crystal Dynamics have reportedly leaked.

As reported by Comicbook, industry insider Colin Moriarty revealed in an episode of Sacred Symbols that sources of his sent him scripts of the game. Reportedly, these scripts are being used to audition potential actors for various roles, giving fans the first possible details about the plot. 'Project Jawbreaker,' as it is called, "is an action-adventure game set in a modern-day world rocked by a mysterious cataclysm," according to the script description. "The tone [of the game] is grounded but with fantastical elements."

The script described Lara Croft as a white woman in her mid-30s that is 5'6" and athletic, and that developer Crystal Dynamics wants to find an "authentic British person" to play her. It also describes a much more mature Croft who seems grounded in herself and her life purpose, no longer troubled by "matters of legacy and familial reckoning." There's also a hint at a potential prodigy for the adventurer, as the description notes that her legacy inspired others to follow a similar path.

Although Croft's adventurers have been mainly solo, other parts of the script description suggest her personal journey centers, at least in part, on her finding others to join in her travels. "Lara has become lonely at the top," the script described. "The beginning of this next chapter presents Lara with a quintessential adult problem; facing something too big to handle alone. On this new adventure, Lara will encounter a challenge she can only overcome with a team at her side."

Lara Croft Reborn

Marvel's Avengers developer Crystal Dynamics announced the development of a new Tomb Raider title during an Unreal Engine 5 event in April. "Our goal is to push the envelope of fidelity and to deliver the high-quality, cinematic action-adventure experience that fans deserve from both Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise," said Dallas Dickenson, franchise manager for Tomb Raider at Crystal Dynamics.

The new Tomb Raider's fate came into question the following month when parent company Square Enix sold Crystal Dynamics to Embracer Group, along with several other smaller developers under its umbrella. Along with the sale came all rights for Tomb Raider, including its extended library. Many fans expressed concern this could lead to a delay on the project or even a cancelation. However, Embracer soon assured fans that work on Tomb Raider would continue as planned.
