The next Tomb Raider game is intended to unify the franchise's alternate timelines. That said, the studio working on that next chapter in the long-running series has nothing to say about an impending release.Crystal Dynamics posted a video on Twitter as part of a celebration looking back over 25 years of Tomb Raider games. While the post covered several different pieces of information, it was the talk about the next installment in the franchise that caught the attention of fans. The developers had been relatively quiet about their plans for the series since completing the reboot trilogy.RELATED: Tomb Raider: Women Gamers Spurred a New Look for the Series

Game director Will Kerslake's portion of the video talked about what he envisions for the project: combining or at least building on the work of two different studios. The now-defunct Core Design released the original game and Crystal Dynamics worked on the reboot trilogy.

"Our origin trilogy told the story of Lara’s early days where she was forged into a survivor, became a hero, and ultimately, a tomb raider," Kerslake said in the video, "while the classic games contained a seasoned and competent adventurer. We envision a future of Tomb Raider unfolding after these established adventures, telling stories that build upon both Core Design’s games and Crystal Dynamics’, working to unify these timelines."

While Crystal Dynamics doesn't have anything to reveal just yet, that doesn't mean Lara Croft fans will have to wait all that long before they can play a new game starring the heroine. Earlier this winter, Square Enix announced it was working on a mobile Tomb Raider game that is set to land sometime later this year. The game, which will be a free-to-play action arcade game, was announced thanks to a video that showed possible foes Lara will encounter in the upcoming title, including giant spiders, rock trolls, and even some dinosaurs.

While Kerslake outlined a bit about his future plans for the franchise, it's not known just what kind of Croft would appear in this future game. Whether involving the video games or the Tomb Raider movies, fans are used to seeing different versions of the main character. The big-screen version was originally portrayed by Angelina Jolie; however, the reboot movie and the upcoming sequel star Alicia Vikander. Yet another version of the much-beloved heroine is coming to Netflix, as the streaming giant announced it was planning an anime version of Tomb Raider.
