Eschewing the Angelina Jolie films entirely, the reboot is based heavily on the modern series of Tomb Raider games from developers Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics. Lara's aesthetics in the new movie also look to be taken wholesale from the current games, which began with 2013's Tomb Raider and then continued with 2015's Rise of the Tomb Raider. The two entries depict a Lara who's still getting her feet wet in the world of swashbuckling adventures, and the character's mindset in the reboot will reflect that status.

Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider

"She has all the fierce, tough, curious, intelligent traits, but we’ve stripped away all of her experience," told Entertainment Weekly, "She hasn’t gone on an adventure just yet. Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished years earlier. Hoping to solve the mystery of her father's disappearance, Croft embarks on a perilous journey to his last-known destination -- a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. The stakes couldn't be higher as Lara must rely on her sharp mind, blind faith and stubborn spirit to venture into the unknown.
