The stage is set for Dark Knights of Steel to be Tom Taylor's most explosive Elseworlds story to date. While interacting with a fan on Twitter, the Superman and Nightwing writer promoted the upcoming Dark Knights of Steel by calling it his "biggest Elseworlds story yet." Taylor went on to highlight that the new book will be "twisting characters and origins in ways never seen before." This comes only days after the cover reveal for the titles' second issue, which teases a confrontation between Batman and Green Arrow.RELATED: Superman: Jon Kent Calls Out His Dad for Failing the World - And He's Right

Announced last month, Dark Knights of Steel will be released as a 12-issue limited series and teams Taylor with acclaimed artist Yasmine Putri. Like other Elseworlds titles before it, the story centers around a reimagined DC Universe. In the case of Dark Knights of Steel, DC's characters will inhabit a fantasy setting, one that sees them ditching their tights for suits of medieval armor.

Early promotional art for the series shows Superman, Batman, Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman and other fan-favorite characters dressed in elaborate fantasy wardrobes. Taylor cites books like The Lord of the Rings as influences, as well as the works of Terry Pratchett. In his own words, Dark Knights of Steel "is for the kids who took dice to school, who chose their own adventure, and dreamed of flying in a cape."

Taylor has a long history of Elseworlds adventures at DC. His early credits include a run on the New 52 Earth 2 title and the Injustice comic series. In the latter, Taylor was given creative freedom to create a wealth of new characters, including an alternate version of Supergirl that inspired her appearance in the upcoming DCEU film The Flash. The sustained popularity of Injustice has kept Taylor busy, with the writer continuing to work on the franchise as recently as earlier this year. Beyond that, Taylor created the world of DCeased, which proved popular enough to warrant multiple sequels and spin-offs.

Taylor is also the writer behind Marvel's Dark Ages, a miniseries drawn by Iban Coello that has already had deadly consequences for the heroes of the Marvel Universe. Set outside of regular continuity, the story revolves around the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men gathering to fight a threat buried deep within the Earth's core. In the wake of their battle, the planet was plunged into a state of perpetual darkness, transforming the heroes. Taylor's tease implies that Dark Knights of Steel will be even bigger Dark Ages, which means that there's no seemingly no limit for the series.
