Following rumors that Batman writer Tom King would be prematurely ending his run on the title with Issue #85, CBR has confirmed that the writer is, in fact, leaving the series. However, this is not the end of his work with the publisher as a whole.CBR has confirmed that King is leaving the series by the end of 2019. We have also learned that King has several new, unannounced projects planned for this year and next. Shortly thereafter, King posted a cryptic tweet thanking his fans.

King's frequent collaborator Mitch Gerads has shared a pair of cryptic tweets of his own, interpreted by fans as referring to the King/Batman situation.

King's Batman run began in 2016 with the start of DC's Rebirth initiative. In December, he posted a rough outline of the remainder of his plans for the series, which would take him through Issue #105. Earlier this month, he teased an upcoming status quo shift that would "change [Batman] for a generation, or maybe more. Maybe forever."

In addition to his work on Batman, King has become an integral part of DC's larger overall plans. Heroes in Crisis, the miniseries he's writing that features art from Clay Mann, Mitch Gerads and Lee Weeks, has already shaken the DC Universe to its core. Furthermore, King has won Eisner Awards for his work on Batman and is currently nominated for his work on Mister Miracle.

While King's longterm future with DC remains unclear, his next work for the publisher, Heroes In Crisis #9, arrives May 29. Batman #72, with art by Mikel Janin, goes on sale June 5.
