After negotiations between Sony and Disney over the film rights to Spider-Man appeared to fail, it looked like the web-slinger would be leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While an eventual deal was made and a third MCU Spider-Man film has been announced, actor Tom Holland is happy with the way Sony would have handled the character.

During an interview with MTV International about the upcoming Pixar film Onward, Holland was asked about his excitement for Spider-Man's official return to the MCU. "Do you know what? I'm super exited," Holland said. "The future for Spider-Man was still very bright with Sony. We had a really, really wonderful idea how we could sort of transition into a Spider-Man without the MCU. Tom Rothman and Amy Pascal were really confident that they were gonna do justice and make a film of the caliber that Spider-Man requires."

Holland further shared his excitement over Spider-Man's return, saying that he feels the character "belongs" in the MCU. The actor didn't offer any specifics about Sony's plan to bring Spider-Man into their universe.

Sony Pictures is currently working on several films starring Spider-Man characters, including Venom 2 and Morbius. It has been rumored that Holland's Peter Parker/Spider-Man would appear in one or both of these films, but nothing has been officially confirmed.

Disney's third Spider-Man film is set to release on July 16, 2021 and will reportedly show Holland and Zendaya reprising their roles.
