Marvel Studios' casting director Sarah Finn recalled Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland looking a little too cool in his first auditions."He auditioned many, many times, which I think he's talked about. The first time was a tape, then we did a notes session over the phone, then he came to LA and we worked in the room together. And he was looking a little cool. I remember saying, 'You know what, can we nerd it up a little bit right now? A little bit,'" Finn told Variety. "But he's such a wonderful actor, he's so charismatic, he worked so hard. He worked so hard to get the part, he's worked so hard every single day since he has had the role and even really leading up to it. When I found out he had been dancing since he was nine and doing eight performances a week of Billy Eliott -- that takes a lot of discipline and stamina."RELATED: Tom Holland Has Pitched His Own Idea for the Next Spider-Man Trilogy

In an interview earlier this year, Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. revealed that Holland's audition for the Marvel Cinematic Universe was his first scene in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, where Peter Parker walks into his apartment to find Tony Stark sitting on the couch with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei). Downey elaborated on how he changed the first line of the scene as a way to test Holland's acting skills.

"Yeah, I may have done that. I did that," said Downey. "And the kid handled it. He was seasoned, good presence. I could tell he had good kung fu; he could roll with the punches and keep it more than interesting."

However, Holland wasn't the only actor auditioning for the role, but despite needing to "nerd up" his performance, Downey explained how it was his co-star's confidence that made him stand out from the rest. "Remember, I'd been testing with a bunch of kids that day," Downey said. "They shall remain unnamed, but they all did well and any one of them would have brought something else to the part of Spider-Man. But why Holland? That's your question, right? Gravitas. Gravitas and the confidence to be able to take on the mantle."

After portraying Peter Parker/Spider-Man in six films since Civil War, Holland has stated that, while his future in the MCU remains unclear at present, it might be time for the Web-Slinger to step aside to make room for a more diverse array of Spider-related characters, like Miles Morales or Silk.

"And that's why for me, I don't want to say goodbye to Spider-Man -- but I feel like we might be ready to say goodbye to Spider-Ma," Holland said in a recent interview. "I don't want to be responsible for holding back the next young person that comes in who deserves it just as much so," Holland said. "I would love to see a future of Spider-Man that's more diverse -- maybe you have a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman. We've had three Spider-Mans in a row; we've all been the same. It'd be nice to see something different."

For now, Holland is starring as Peter Parker/Spider-Man once again in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is now playing exclusively in theaters.
