"Mad Max: Fury Road" star Tom Hardy opened up about losing his role in "Suicide Squad" during an interview with Variety about his upcoming film "The Revenant," which prevented him from taking the DC Universe gig because of the unusual shooting schedule.

"It punched right into that, yeah. That got derailed for me," he said of the "Suicide Squad" role. "Was I bummed? Of course I was. I hate fucking losing work. I kept bemoaning that they were losing me significant money on a daily basis. Actually, it was good for my character."

Hardy would have played Rick Flag, leader of the Suicide Squad, in David Ayer's adaptation, which the director has described as the "'Dirty Dozen' with supervillains." The role eventually went to Joel Kinnaman.

"Suicide Squad," based on the DC Comics team and starring Leto, Robbie, Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo and Adam Beach as Slipknot, is scheduled for release on Aug. 5, 2016.
