Tom Hanks reveals the small number of his films he actually enjoys.

Hanks spoke with People in promotion of his upcoming first novel, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, which details the ins and outs of the film industry. Over the course of his four-decade career, consisting of around 80 films, the two-time Oscar winner revealed he only holds high regard for about four of them. "I've made a ton of movies, and four of them are pretty good, I think, and I'm still amazed at how films come together," Hanks said. "From a flicker of an idea to the flickering image onscreen, the whole process is a miracle."

Hanks doesn't disclose exactly which four of his films he appreciates. Therefore, fans of his work are free to make their assumptions. The best actor winner made his film debut as Elliot in the 1980 slasher He Knows You're Alone, but arguably gained attention for his lead role in the 1988 film Big. Since his breakthrough role, Hanks won best actor for Forrest Gump and Philadelphia. The actor earned three other nominations in the same category for Big, Saving Private Ryan and Cast Away.

Tom Hanks Has Had a Storied Career

In addition to his live-action performances, Hanks tried his hand at voice acting. Many critics praised Hanks for his performance as Woody in the 1995 film Toy Story, Pixar's feature-length film that grew into a popular franchise. Hanks' skill proved beyond the acting realm after his 12 Primetime Emmy Award nominations for producer roles on series like Band of Brothers and The Pacific.

While Hanks' successful career dates back decades, the accomplished actor is still active in the film industry. Recently, Hanks portrayed Italian woodcarver Geppetto, Pinocchio's father, in the live-action adaptation of Disney's classic animated film. Despite Hanks' appearance, many critics and audience members expressed their distaste toward the 2022 film for its alternate ending and inclusion of modern-day references.

In addition to Pinocchio, Hanks starred as Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis Presley's manager, in Baz Luhrmann's biopic of the late singer and actor. Elvis featured Switched at Birth actor Austin Butler as the King of Rock and Roll and supporting cast members like Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery and David Wenham. Unlike Pinocchio, Elvis earned many positive reviews for its musical sequences and costume design. The film became the second-highest-grossing music biopic in history after only Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.

The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece hits shelves on May 9, 2023. Pinocchio is currently streaming on Disney+.
