A new image from the upcoming biopic Tolkien has surfaced, showing an aspect of the title character's life that takes place only in his head: the conception of the world of Middle-Earth.
The Fox Searchlight film, which tells the life story of author J.R.R. Tolkien, will include scenes describing the fantasy world taking shape in his imagination, intersecting with the external world of his personal history during and around World War I. The latest still image, released by Fandango, shows two mounted warriors against a background of fire and destruction.
J.R.R. Tolkien's books, which are primarily set in Middle-Earth, have become the foundation of the modern fantasy genre. His masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, was made into a wildly successful movie trilogy directed by Peter Jackson, followed by a three-part interpretation of its prequel The Hobbit. Currently, Amazon is developing a TV series centered on the earlier history of Middle-Earth.
Tolkien is credited with influencing countless writers and artists who in turn have become modern classics of fantasy. His biography will explore the context of his own life and the real-life events that inspired him to create the universe and characters so beloved by future generations.
Directed by Dome Karukoski, Tolkien stars Nicholas Hoult, Lilly Collins, Colm Meaney, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, Tom Glynn-Carney, Craig Roberts, Laura Donnelly, Genevieve O'Reilly, Pam Ferris and Derek Jacobi, and is set to be released on May 10.
