Tokyo Revengers has achieved a new sales milestone by passing 50 million copies in circulation.
The series' latest achievement was announced on the official Japanese Twitter account for the series. The manga's anime adaptation, which was produced by The Heroic Legend of Arslan studio Liden Films, has been credited with substantially increasing the series' mainstream popularity, as 40 million of the manga's total 50 million copies were sold after the anime premiered in spring 2021. The manga's publishers previously announced that Tokyo Revengers had a circulation of 40 million in Sept. 2021, meaning that in the last four months alone, the manga has moved over 10 million copies.
Tokyo Revengers premiered in 2017, and in less than four years, it has already matched the lifetime sales of several other anime classics, including the superhero smash hit My Hero Academia and Rumiko Takahashi's own story about a time-displaced teenager, Inuyasha. In terms of overall circulation, Tokyo Revengers is just 10 million units behind Japan's currently most popular new series, Jujutsu Kaisen, which was the best-selling manga in the region in 2021.
The series tells the story of Takemichi Hanagaki, a loser in his mid-twenties who is devastated to find out the only girl who ever showed any interest in him, his childhood sweetheart Hinata Tachibana, has been murdered. After being pushed in front of an oncoming train, Takemichi wakes up 12 years in the past, in the body of his teenage self, with all of his memories and knowledge of the coming years intact. Determined to change the future, Takemichi falls in with the Tokyo Manji Gang and tries to alter past events in order to save Hinata's life.
The anime is scheduled to return with an adaptation of the Christmas Showdown arc. A premiere date for the show's return has yet to be announced, but most of the cast and crew of the first season are expected to reprise their roles for the new continuation. One notable absence will be voice actor Tatsuhisa Suzuki, who exited the series following a public infidelity scandal. Suzuki's character, Ken "Draken" Ryuguji, will be recast.
In addition to the anime and manga, Tokyo Revengers has also found success with a live-action movie. While live-action adaptations of anime have a notably negative reputation, the series' first movie was incredibly well-received in Japan when it was released there last summer, and ultimately went on to become the highest grossing live-action film in the country for 2021.
The first season of Tokyo Revengers is available for streaming on Crunchyroll. Ken Wakui's manga is available digitally from Kodansha, and will be released in print by Seven Seas Entertainment in May 2022. An international release for the live-action movie has not been announced.
