It is rare that a vampire show manages to offer anything other than just another rehashing of age-old tropes and clichés. Tokyo Ghoul stands out because the series introduced vampires in a new way where they were imaginatively integrated into modern society.

Of course, another reason for the success of the show was its awesome cast of complex multidimensional characters.  Heroes like Kaneki and Touka worked to overcome both internal struggles and external threats, while the villains that added a sense of dread to the story, their cruelty and inventiveness intensifying the narrative. Here are five villains fan feel bad for and five that are hated:

10 Felt Bad: Nishiki Nishio

Nishiki Nishio from Tokyo Ghoul.

Nishiki was first introduced as a villain early in the first season of the show. This ghoul befriended Ken Kaneki's best friend, Hide, then tried to feed on Hide in front of Kaneki as an act of territorial dominance. He also moved into the feeding grounds that had been Rize's and killed an innocent ghoul for daring to feed there.

Later, Nishiki became an ally to Kaneki and the others. When his love of a human woman was revealed, the story of his past also came out, showing how he still grieved over the loving sister who was taken from him.

9 Hated: Yakumo "Jason" Oomori

Yakumo Oomori was one of the most sadistic character in the whole series. He was known by the nickname "Jason" due to the fact that he viciously tortured his victims while wearing a hockey mask in the style of Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th slasher films.

Jason tortured Kaneki for days, cutting his fingers off and waiting for them to regrow, then doing it all over again, all the while making Kaneki count down from 1000 in units of 7 to preserve his sanity through it all. Eventually, Kaneki broke free and killed Jason, but by that point, Kaneki had been permanently changed due to the trauma.

8 Felt Bad: Rize Kamishiro

Rize's a bit of a mystery. She was a bibliophile who went out on a date with Ken Kaneki and the tried to feed upon him. When steel girders fell and crushed them both, Rize's organs were surgically placed into Kaneki's body, turning him into a ghoul.

Gradually, more details about Rize's life came to light. She was a binge eater who gorged on more victims than was necessary to survive. She was also fiercely territorial and somehow inspired other people to obsess over her. Despite her cruel nature, the mystery surrounding her and the fact that she gave new life to Kaneki have ensured fans feel bad about her loss.

7 Hated : Kureo Mado

Kureo Mado was a human Fist Class Ghoul Investigator with the Commission of Counter Ghoul. He excelled at his job, masterfully tracking, hunting, and killing ghouls. More than just a job, this work was his passion. He delighted in torturing ghouls as he killed them, even murdering some with weapons made from the bodies of their loved ones.

Kureo was the perfect human villain, preying on ghouls even more savagely than they preyed on humans, and doing so out of the sheer joy of inflicting suffering. His malice suggested that the greatest monster is humanity.

6 Felt Bad: Kazuichi Banjou

Kazuichi Banjou was a ghoul who had romantic feelings for Rize, though his love for her was unrequited. He rudely barged into Antiku, the cafe where Kaneki and many of the other main characters worked. While there, he smelled Rize's scent on Kaneki, prompting him to try to assault Kaneki out of misplaced jealousy. He also led others in the Aogiri Tree organization to the cafe, resulting in Kaneki being kidnapped and tortured.

Despite ties to the Aogiri Tree, Banjou was not a bad guy. He was a bit of an idiot who gave into the Aogiri Tree's coercion, but while there, he worked to free Kaneki from them and left the organization soon after.

5 Hated: Shuu Tsukiyama

Shuu Tsukiyama was a flamboyant and over-the-top ghoul who seemed determined to do everything in the most theatrically melodramatic way possible. Known to both humans and other ghouls as "the Gourmet," he had a passion for feeding on the most delicious tastes he could acquire from his fellow ghouls, cannibalizing them.

Shuu befriended Kaneki early in the series, even enjoying an outing that seemed suspiciously similar to Kaneki's date with Rize. Then Shuu betrayed Kaneki and tried to eat him. Time and again, Shuu continued this pursuit, obsessing over wanting to eat the series's protagonist.

4 Felt Bad: Ayato Kirishima

Ayato was a ghoul with the Aogiri Tree who has expressed a disdain for humans and for any ghoul who did not actively hurt humans. He was also Touka's brother.

Despite his wanton anti-human violence and attacks against his fellow ghouls while working with the Aogiri Tree, it's hard not to feel sorry for Ayato. Repeated flashbacks to his early childhood revealed the innocent smiling boy he used to be when he lived with his nurturing parents. Between knowing that Ayato once was an innocent and his ties to other characters like his sister Touka, there's a lot to pity about how he eventually turned out.

3 Hated: Juuzou Suzuya

Juuzou Suzuya was another human Special Class Ghoul with the Commission of Counter Ghoul. Like Kureo Mado, Juuzou took sadistic delight in killing ghouls. However, unlike Mado, Juuzou was not driven by cruelty for its own malicious sake, but rather approached everything in life with a childlike playfulness. Covered in stitched scars, the character had survived severe injuries.

When Juuzou's backstory was revealed, it became impossible not to feel sorry for him. As a child, he was tortured by a ghoul who assumed a motherlike role for him and forced him to participate in gladiatorial combat. However, his complete disregard for life and the way he reveled in killing make it hard not to be completely unnerved by the character.

2 Felt Bad: The Yasuhisa Twins

Kurona and Nashiro Yasuhisa were a pair of twin sisters. Though they began life as humans, they were forcibly turned into one-eyed ghouls, not unlike what happened to Ken Kaneki. Both joined up with Aogiri Tree, which was what really made them villains, as they attacked numerous main characters while with the organization.

During the assault on the Cochlea prison, they worked to break some of the inmates out, but were intercepted by Juuzou, who they'd known from before becoming ghouls. The sadistic human investigator cut them to pieces and they fled for their lives, barely escaping.

1 Hated: Eto Yoshimura

Eto was a ghoul who led the Aogiri Tree. She had several aliases, being known in the ghoul world as the notorious One-Eyed Owl while also writing novels under the feigned human identity of Sen Takatsuki. She was even Kaneki's favorite author.

In her role as the leader of the radical Aogiri Tree organization, she ordered actions that resulted in countless deaths. However, what made her truly despicable was how she would approach others, gain their trust, play on their insecurities, and manipulate them, ultimately betraying or toying with almost everyone she met.
