Tokyo Ghoul is a beloved anime, especially since the manga was one of the highest-selling ones of the decade. It's not the usual peppy, upbeat anime all about overcoming odds with the power of unbreakable determination and drive, though.

Instead, it's a horrifying story about a world where vampire/zombie creatures exist called Ghouls, and they're everywhere. It follows Ken Kaneki for the first season and Haise Sasaki for the second, both Ghoul-Human hybrids and both arguably the same person. Ken/Haise are such nice lads, but what about the other characters? What are their motivations, how would we define their alignments? Let's take a look.

9 True Neutral: Ken Kaneki & Haise Sasaki

Ken Kaneki after becoming a ghoul Tokyo Ghoul

Before we get to the supporting cast, let's talk a bit more about these two people "trapped" in one body, Ken and Haise. Ken Kaneki was ripped from his normal human life and thrust into the dark world of the Ghouls thanks to one Rize Kamishiro. He had to learn that these monsters, while murderous and deranged, usually just do it to survive. It was a great story of how "good" humans can be evil and "bad" Ghouls can be good.

Then comes Haise Sasaki, a Squad Leader of the Quinx Doves. This good-natured lad slowly comes to terms with the fact that he's just Ken Kaneki fighting off his trauma by assuming another identity. And, we get to see how Ken would approach his life both as a Dove and a Ghoul, which is an especially useful setup for the game that came out not too long ago.

8 Chaotic Neutral: Juuzou Suzuya

Juuzou Suzuya from Tokyo Ghoul: RE.

Juuzou is another human character in TG that was forced into seeing the underbelly of the Ghoul world at quite a young age. Juuzou was kidnapped and sold at a human auction to a dreadfully deprived Rank SS Ghoul named Big Madam who raised him to do tricks and perform with shocking amounts of torture as a consequence.

As such, Suzuya is a bit messed up, he was saved by the Doves (specifically one Agent Shinohara), but he doesn't seem to have much of a sense of "justice". Still, this kid is a master at his job, eliminating Ghouls left and right. As Tokyo Ghoul transitions to Tokyo Ghoul: Re, we get to see this cheerfully dangerous lad grow up a tad and come into his own.

7 Lawful Neutral: Yoshimura The "Non-Killing Owl"

Tokyo Ghoul's One Eyed Owl's Ukaku Kagune

Yoshimura might be one of the most deadly existences in the TG universe. He's one of the strongest Ghouls and has successfully managed to survive as one to quite the old age, which is pretty rare. Now he runs the Anteiku, a coffee shop for Ghouls, as well as the place most of the main cast meets up in.

Yoshimura goes by a few names such as Kuzen or the Non-Killing Owl, but his most pure identity is as Anteiku's manager. Kuzen adores both species since he's a Ghoul himself who fell in love with a human. And, as such, he works for the best interests of everyone, all while following the rules to the best of his ability.

6 Chaotic Evil: Shuu "Gourmet" Tsukiyama

Shuu Tsukiyama, otherwise known as "The Gourmet" by his compatriates, is an odd character in the supporting cast. First of all, he tries to kill Kaneki multiple times in order to eat him. Secondly, he's a murderer that doesn't want to stop eating human like the rest of them. And third, his goals are entirely selfish.

He's obsessed with eating Kaneki, to the point that he eventually starves himself almost to death. We liked him as a character and his entire story was pretty interesting (while pretty ridiculous), but Shuu isn't a good person or even a decent Ghoul, he's a traitor to whoever gets between him and his precious Ken.

5 Lawful Evil: Kureo Mado

Kureo Mado is the first example of an "evil human" in Tokyo Ghoul. He's a Dove, he's talented, and he works hard to teach those under him. But, he's obsessed with killing Ghouls, reveals in torturing them, and has no moral compass when it comes to what he should and shouldn't do to Ghouls.

Take Hinami for example, her entire family was killed by Mado, in a truly gruesome fashion. But, he's part of an organization, and most of the time, he follows the process of hunting Ghouls to a tee. Still, he's not a good person, even if we can understand how he got to this point.

4 Neutral Evil: Touka Kirishima

Touka is the main female lead in both Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul: Re. She's a Ghoul who happened upon Kaneki when he was first considering eating human meat. Throughout the series, she's made Ken Kaneki into the person he is, and also falls in love with him. She's strong-willed, confident, and capable. Honestly, in the early parts of TG, she was a monster, and that's just based on what we knew, not all the stuff we didn't know about.

Touka grew up as a Ghoul. She listens to Kaneki and doesn't kill humans but not because it was her decision. But, nothing can take back all the innocent humans she's killed, especially when hunting down Mado. That scene where she takes out the two useless investigators just because they worked with Mado still gives us chills.

3 Neutral Good: Hinami Fueguchi

Hinami with a pained expression in her eyes

Hinami watched her Mother die in front of her and still actively chooses not to pursue revenge. That alone already makes her more emotionally mature than Touka (at least in the early parts). Hinami is another Ghoul child that was raised as a Ghoul. Both her mother and father were killed by the Doves, but she still works with Anteiku and Ken for the benefit of both species. For most of Tokyo Ghoul, she's just a little girl with a decent Kagune.

But, in Tokyo Ghoul: Re, she becomes quite the capable adult. Hinami is a perfect example of a Ghoul who is able to empathize with both sides, and she'll always pick to hurt herself before hurting anyone else.

2 Chaotic Good: Hideyoshi Nagachika

Hide is our favorite character in Tokyo Ghoul. Some may find him boring because he usually serves as the "overly cheerful positive friend" that we see so often in Anime. Think Hinata from Haikyu. Hideyoshi is Ken Kaneki's best friend since they were young, and he's also the only reason Ken maintained any sense of a social life before he was ghoul-i-fied.

But, towards the end of season 1, Hide is "killed" by Ken Kaneki while Ken is going through a sort of psychopathic episode. Thankfully, Hide returns in Tokyo Ghoul: Re, a bit less smiley, but overall the same loveable dork we knew from the first episode.

1 Lawful Good: Akira Mado & Koutarou Amon

And finally, we're going to cover this pair of Doves as one entry, because why not. Amon Koutarou and Akira Mado are the best couple in the series, at least we think so. They've been through so much together and the chemistry between them is obvious. Both of them are workaholics, so much so that it's pretty absurd. Akira learned her work ethic from her obsessive father Kureo and Amon strives to grow constantly due to his tragic upbringing with a Ghoul priest.

The two go through a whole ringer of misfortune as Amon is turned into a Ghoul and Akira watches most of her subordinates die. But, at the end of it all, these two have each other and always strive for the best outcome for everyone in their lives, even if it means working with Ghouls.
