While Bruce Wayne is still a child at the end of Todd Phillips' Joker, the filmmaker would like to see what shape his Gotham City's Batman would take.

Phillips expressed interest in what sort of Dark Knight would appear -- presumably decades after the events of the film -- in the standalone movie's grounded, gritty approach to the fictional DC Comics city. However, Phillips was quick to clarify that he had no interest in helming such a project himself, content to see such a project as a fan.

"It’s a beautiful Gotham. What I would like to see someone tackle is what Batman looks like from that Gotham," Phillips said in an interview with Variety. "I’m not saying I’m going to do that. What was interesting to me about the inclusion of Batman in our movie was, ‘What kind of Batman does that Gotham make?’ That’s all I meant by that."

Phillips earlier claimed that the runaway commercial and critical success of Joker was unrelated to Batman, who only appears as a child in the film, though he's hinted at as being a half-brother of Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck. According to filmmaker Kevin Smith, an early script featured Arthur killing Bruce Wayne in the ending to Joker. However, with Bruce presumably still alive, the boy may grow to face the Clown Prince of Crime years later.

Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais and Shea Whigham. The film is currently available on digital HD on and will arrive on Blu-ray, 4K UHD and DVD Jan. 7.
