The following article contains spoilers for To Your Eternity: Season 2 Episode 10, "Resonance," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

To Your Eternity: Season 2's ninth episode shone a light on Fushi's training as the immortal prepared for all-out war against the Nokkers, as well as divulging the location of their final battleground: Renril City. Gifted a beached ship by Bon, Fushi sought to use the ship to temper their power, increasing the range of their ability to sense from the land they touch.

Episode 10 catches up with Fushi during their training, trying to extend their reach through the ship. As the immortal continues to push the limits of their abilities, Kahaku leads the Guardians and Uralis army in battle against the Nokkers, and Bon pleads with the Princess of Renril to evacuate the city on the day of the Nokker invasion. While she refuses, she does eventually accept the alliance's help in the impending battle.

Fushi Meets a New Companion Unlike Any They've Met Before

Eko, the young girl Fushi adopts

Midway through their training, Fushi decides to stop off at a nearby town for supplies. After stocking up, they're horrified to find a circus in town -- with its main attraction being a caged brother and sister who are left starved and unkempt by the cruel ringleader. Fushi manages to free the two siblings and takes them back to the ship, but the brother tragically dies on the way back, and Fushi and the sister are forced to bury the boy.

Back on the ship, Fushi feeds and cleans the girl, who is mostly non-verbal. The only word she speaks the entire episode is "eko" upon seeing a cat ("neko" in Japanese), prompting Fushi to name her Eko. Fushi soon discovers that Eko and her brother communicate via a clay pot they carry, seemingly able to project the user's thoughts and memories in some capacity.

Kahaku confirms that Eko is a member of the mythical clay pot tribe, all of whom communicate this way. When Eko learns that the girl's village was wiped out by Nokkers, they decide to adopt her permanently, despite Kahaku's protests that she won't be able to contribute in the upcoming battle. Fushi doesn't care, though -- the immortal is adamant that they have a duty of care toward her.

It's an interesting new dynamic for Fushi and one of their companions, with the immortal typically in the care of those around them. Even at a point where Fushi might be over a century old, Kahaku and Bon have acted as the immortal's caretakers to some extent, trying to teach Fushi about various facets of what it means to be human. The only exception thus far has been Pioran, who started off as Fushi's guardian but ended up too infirm to look after herself, forcing Fushi to act as her caregiver -- but this was a dynamic that only lasted for a single episode before Pioran passed away.

Fushi Becomes an Ecosystem

Fushi ecosystem

Fushi's relationship with Eko is a reversal of the usual dynamic the immortal has with their companions and might be a chance for the immortal to showcase a new parental side of their character. It's not the only way the episode showcases Fushi's growth, though -- as they train on the ship, their powers grow to unprecedented levels.

After struggling with replicating the boat, Fushi decides to use vines from the nearby forest as "limbs", treating everything in their surroundings as an extension of them. Slowly but surely, Fushi is able to create an entire self-sustaining ecosystem from the vines, able to feed Eko and the various animals living on the ship.

By the time Kahaku and Bon pay Fushi a visit, not only has the immortal been able to replicate the boat, but their ecosystem has grown to a three-mile radius. Fushi demonstrates complete control over the ecosystem, able to create husks and transfer their consciousness to them on the fly.

Fushi and their companions

It makes for Fushi's most impressive display of power to date, and an indication of just how far the immortal has come since the slapdash shapeshifter viewers met back in To Your Eternity's first few episodes. Fushi seems proud of their growth, but Bon is worried -- he notes that the display of such immense power puts Fushi even further out of step with humanity.

Fushi's struggles with not quite fitting in with humanity have been a motif for most of the story so far, and this does seem to put them one step closer to godhood. Whether that will be a source of angst moving forward remains to be seen, but for now, Fushi is pleased to have reached this level through their own merits and on their own terms.

While Fushi, Eko and Kahaku head to Renril City, Bon comes out with a surprising pledge: the prince aims to find more immortals to join their cause. The other three are baffled at the proposal, but Bon reasons that there are so many strange people in the world that nothing's impossible. Whether anything comes of Bon's search remains to be seen, but it's certainly an interesting narrative prospect as To Your Eternity inches one step closer to its impending climactic battle.
