The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of To Your Eternity, now streaming on Crunchyroll.

With Season 2 of To Your Eternity set to air on Oct. 23, fans might need a quick refresher of the first season of the popular fantasy anime. Season 1 aired in April 2021, with its strong debut episode marking the series as one to watch for. The series is written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Oima; although Oima is best known for her series A Silent Voice, To Your Eternity has garnered its own share of praise.

The story follows an immortal being who was sent to Earth by a mysterious being. He meets several people as he wanders throughout the world, one of whom gives him his first name: Fushi. Here's a refresher of what happened in Season 1 of the hit anime To Your Eternity before Season 2 returns.

Fushi's Powers in To Your Eternity

Fushi landed on Earth as a mere sphere with the curious ability to copy things he interacts with. His introduction saw him turning into different objects and living beings that he was stimulated by, such as a rock or a living being -- but there's a significant catch. While Fushi can shape-shift into pretty much anything and anyone and can take on their appearance, voice and mannerisms, they must be dead in order for him to do so.

His powers also enable him to regenerate any missing limbs or injuries he has incurred, although he is still susceptible to poison. He can also produce items out of seemingly nothing as long as he was stimulated by it first, as shown by his ability to create food and weapons. One of the more profound powers Fushi has is empathy; he's able to feel people's pain and suffering, even if he's not in the same place as them.

What Fushi Learned From His Friends

to your eternity fushi march name

The first person Fushi meets is the Nameless Boy. Despite this boy believing Fushi to be his loyal wolf-friend Joaan, the two developed a close relationship. The Nameless Boy was the first person to give Fushi a home and the first to become his friend. In his last breath, the boy passed his final wish on to Fushi, which was to see the world. Although Fushi didn't quite understand what that meant at first, he understood the boy on an intrinsically emotional level.

Fushi met March shortly after, but under unfavorable circumstances: the girl was being prepared as a sacrifice to Oniguma. Although March never had a chance to grow up, she did get to fulfill her dream of becoming a mother by taking care of Fushi. The immortal being found a brother in another young child: Gugu, who wears an enormous mask and bears an even heavier past. Of all the people Fushi has met so far in To Your Eternity, Gugu is the one he's stayed with the longest. During the four years Fushi lived with him, the two loved and protected each other like real brothers.

However, Fushi's powers and immortality became a curse as he soon realized with despair that death followed in his wake everywhere he went. People kept getting hurt or dying when he was around; when he met Tonari and her friends at Jananda, he tried to keep them at arm's length. Despite his best efforts, Tonari, and later Pioran, made him realize he shouldn't push people away. Like everyone else, Fushi needs friends too.

Fushi at the End of To Your Eternity Season 1

By the end of the Season 1, Fushi had managed to evade the dangerous Nokkers, his sworn enemies who are devoted to stealing all of his vessels from him. However, he was no longer the same orb as when the story began. Losing his friends one by one had thoroughly broken Fushi, and watching Pioran lose herself to dementia and finally die was the last straw.

Although Tonari and Pioran had tried to instill into his brain that he shouldn't isolate himself, Fushi decided to lock himself up on an island. For an undisclosed number of years, he killed and ate the Nokkers that would inevitably find him. The final scene of To Your Eternity's first season showed a much older and grizzly Fushi.
