Before IDW took the reigns on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Archie Comics had their own series involving the turtle teens. During this period, Archie Comics put the Turtles in a single-issue crossover with the Riverdale gang, resulting in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Meet Archie by Ryan Brown, Dean Clarrain, Stephen Murphy, Ken Mitchroney, Stan Goldberg, and Jim Lawson.

Though Archie is no stranger to wacky crossovers, credit for the story is broken up in a rather interesting fashion. Ryan Brown and Dean Clarrain, the story's writers, were writers on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures comic series at the time. Ken Mitchroney and Ryan Brown, who were in charge of the Turtles' art specifically, had also done work on several issues. Stan Goldberg and Rudy Lapick were in charge of the art for Archie's characters, having spent decades drawing the characters already. As a result, the pencils are drastically different for the characters but wholly authentic.

Titled "Green Legs and Gams," the story starts with Betty Cooper and Archie Andrews on a date. Archie parks his car by the mountainside for a romantic view of the sunset, but while the two lovebirds are there, they witness Cudley the Cowlick -- a transdimensional cow -- spit out the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Assuming the turtles to be aliens, Betty and Archie get spooked and run to Pop's Diner to warn their friends. Unfortunately, no one in Riverdale believes Betty and Archie's outlandish tale about alien cows and turtles. From there, the gang all goes to a Josie and the Pussycats concert (where they seem to be performing some kind of amalgamation between Janet Jackson's "Escapade" and an original song).

Meanwhile, the Turtles used their allotted 12 hours in this dimension to steal clothes from a clothesline, which they say they'll return on their way out. In a split-second decision, they also make their way to the Josie and the Pussycats concert -- just in time to see Veronica Lodge grabbed by two men claiming to be from the IRS. Donatello explained to the Riverdale gang how dimensional travel worked and told the other teens that they'd seen Veronica get kidnapped. From there, the two groups of teens devised a plan. Meanwhile, the "IRS" agents try to get ransom money from Hiram in exchange for Veronica's safety. Jughead posed as a pizza delivery boy, approaching the fake IRS agents' house with two pies. While Jughead had them distracted, the Turtles leaped through the window and beat up the bad guys. Archie and Betty were... kind of just there.

Hiram Lodge conveniently bursts into the room where Veronica was held, holding a briefcase full of money. He says, "Well, you kids have saved my daughter and my petty cash reserve... and although you are dressed rather oddly... what say I treat you all to pizza down at Pop's?!" Michelangelo excitedly accepts this deal almost immediately. With Veronica safe, the two groups of teens headed back to Pop's Diner for some snacks and quality time. Raphael and Veronica shared a moment, Donatello geeked out with Dilton Doiley, Michelangelo and Jughead had a pizza-eating contest and Leonardo hung out with Archie and Betty. Hot Dog, Jughead's loyal dog, sat outside and wondered why turtles were allowed in Pop's Diner but he wasn't.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Meet Archie was an anthology comic, so although the story ended, the comic didn't. The other three stories in the issue were set entirely in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures comic series, relegating Archie and his friends to the first story's 22-pages.
