WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #112 by Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, Sophie Campbell, Jodi Nishijima, Ronda Pattison and Shawn Lee, on sale now.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been trying to add some vibrancy to the desolate Mutant Town and its environment, especially as Mayor Baxter Stockman and the government are neglecting this quarantine zone. It doesn't help that the likes of Karai, Old Hob and the Mutanimals are still trying to exploit the place, and the mutants are willing to do anything for basic necessities and resources.

However, most of them have been making do with the Ninja Turtles and their dojo being something of a haven. However, Donatello's journey and his romantic aspirations with Mona Lisa suffer a massive roadblock when his true origin is revealed in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #112.

Mona, a salamander, was last seen being abandoned by her family when she called them to show them what she was turned into in New York. This has her totally hating Hob for detonating the mutagen bomb, and there's a lot of resentment towards his supporters at a group session at the dojo. It's meant to be a therapy session, but some of her aggression and pent-up rage stems from what could be perceived to be a bad break-up with Donnie earlier on.

Donnie and Mona want to start a school, and they clearly developed feelings for each other as they got closer and learned more about each other's lives. She explains how her family ditched her, but when she inquires about Donnie's human family, she's shocked to hear the Turtles, Splinter, Alopex and a few others were never human. Mona melts down, thinking she can't trust Donnie as he admits the brothers are reincarnated warrior spirits from feudal Japan. She wasn't expecting this and in a panic she heads to therapy, which leads to the argument and a brawl between the factions.

In the melee, Mona tells Mikey off, making it clear that creatures like him won't ever relate to the pains human suffered when their agency was taken away by Hob. While Mona certainly makes a valid point, she still seems to be overlooking the mix of the science, the mysticism behind them and their intelligence before judging them, especially as they'd never do the same to her, no matter her background.

After the riot, Mona realizes she's wrong and listens to Mikey lay down plans to patch Mutant Town up and unite everyone. They all have a common goal of peace but right now, and Mona seems to hate herself. That's why she lashed out at a helpless Donnie and doesn't know how to process the fallout of Hob's invasive chemical assault. For the moment, it's not entirely clear if these two will make up, but they seem to be back on the same side again, if nothing else.
