When the first trailer for DC Universe's inaugural original series Titans debuted at Comic-Con International in San Diego this past July, fans were split over Brenton Thwaites' Robin declaring "Fuck Batman" in a moment of visible anger and resentment towards his former mentor.

According to executive producer and writer Geoff Johns, the line was intentionally used out of context in the trailer to provoke a response and get people talking about the series ahead of its premiere.

"We knew that line would be polarizing in the episode. The attitude and the story behind it, it's powerful. But out of context it's a line that people are going to over dissect," admitted Johns in an interview with DC Comics' official blog. "When I heard that they were going to use it in the trailer, I knew it would be polarizing because it's out of context. Originally, we were excited for people to find it in the show because it's part of a bigger scene, but we knew that it was going to be polarizing no matter when people saw it. And I can't wait for people to see the rest of the show."

The scene's actual usage in the greater context of the series reveals that Dick Grayson left Batman rather than run the risk of continuing down Bruce Wayne's dark path as the Titans' version of the character freely employs lethal force against Gotham City's criminals. While Grayson does deliver bone-crushing justice, he does not explicitly kill anyone in the series premiere, in an effort to distance himself from his mentor.
