The following contains spoilers for Titans Season 4, Episode 2, "Mother Mayhem," which is now streaming on HBO Max.

Titans is once again fully embracing the more mystical elements of DC Comics by bringing to life an essential force of nature from the books. The Red connects all living organisms within the universe, and certain characters are allowed to embrace its power. Beast Boy is one of the current avatars of The Red and Titans Season 4 appears to dive further into his abilities and where they come from. Introducing The Red opens up incredible new powers for Beast Boy and creates avenues to introduce new characters.

Beast Boy has been held back from his full potential since the beginning of Titans, with only small teases dropped throughout the first three seasons. The Red can change all of that. The forcee chooses whom to imbue with great powers; Animal Man and Vixen have also been avatars of The Red in the comics. Connecting Beast Boy to this elemental force gives the HBO Max series an easy way to elevate his abilities and finally let his character shine.

The Red, The Green and The Rot

The Red and The Green

DC Comics has multiple elemental forces; the three most prominent are The Red, The Green and The Rot. The Green is well-known because of Swamp Thing, who is the avatar of the Green. This force connects all plant life, giving Swamp Thing his incredible powers and his duty to guard the Earth's ecological areas. Conversely, The Rot is connected to death and decay, allowing people to harness the disturbing powers of sickness and death.

The Red connects all living things -- humans, animals, organisms, anything with blood and tissue. Titans' Beast Boy seems to have been transported to The Red when he first tried on his costume in S.T.A.R. Labs. This is likely where his powers come from. The character has been oblivious about this until Season 4, but with the rise of the Blood Cult, The Red may be ready to summon its avatar and show him the way.

Animal Man is the most famous avatar of The Red. He can tap into the powers of any animal on Earth, much like Vixen, who uses a totem to assist her connection to the force. Elsewhere, The Parliament of Limbs is a council of previous avatars. They inhabit The Red and help to guide new avatars on their path. In Titans Season 4, Episode 2, "Mother Mayhem," Beast Boy likely didn't remember transforming into a gorilla because he wasn't in his body; he was in The Red. The Parliament may have been trying to speak to him, but he wasn't ready to hear.

How The Red Connects to Brother Blood

blood pours from Brother Blood's arms

It's no coincidence that Titans is introducing The Red at the same time as Brother Blood and his cult. The Blood Cult worship blood and the power they believe it has. The return of Brother Blood and Mother Mayhem could have awoken the Parliament of Limbs. In turn, the Parliament may sense the danger of the Blood Cult and need Beast Boy to be their avatar in a battle against him. Brother Blood may even seek The Red's power and knowledge. If the Blood Cult took over The Red, they would be able to dominate the planet.

The Red will have a powerful influence over Titans Season 4. Not only will it help to increase Beast Boy's abilities and allow him to unlock his full potential, it may also be a driving motivation for Brother Blood and Mother Mayhem. Bringing The Red into Titans also opens the door for appearances by characters like Animal Man and Swamp Thing, as well as a deeper understanding of the mystical realm that was created in the pages of DC Comics. The Red will likely change Beast Boy for good and can lead to much greater things for both him and the show in the future.

Titans streams Thursdays on HBO Max.
